Anyone who has worn glitter nail polish knows its a pain to remove. The glitter particles wont break down or come off. Not only does this take a toll on your nailsand sanitybut it’s;bad for the environment too.
Made up of plastic and aluminum bonded with polyethylene terephthalate , glitter doesnt break down and instead makes its way into water systems and wildlife. The plastics can collect toxins, becoming endocrine-disrupting chemicals that are consumed by fish and eventually humans in the food chain.
Activists are currently pushing for a glitter ban similar to the one on microplastics. In the meantime, the best action to take is to avoid glitter in nail polish and other cosmetic products.

Nail polish is among the least natural of all cosmetics. In fact, its more akin to fast-drying paint than to any conventional sort of makeup. Manufacturers begin by mixing pigment into an opaque and glossy blending agent. Next, they dissolve this mixture into a solvent selected for its ability to evaporate quickly when exposed to air. Theres nothing intrinsic to nail polish, except for perhaps coloring agents, thats likely to involve animal ingredients. And you wont even need to read ingredient lists, since practically all cruelty-free vegan nail polishes are labeled accordingly.
Since nail polish comes into contact with the body, many brands still use animal tests to establish safety. Back in the day, nail polishes underwent no safety testing. Even worse, they commonly contained treated metals and other potentially hazardous substances. And all common nail polish ingredients were at one time tested on animals.

Orly was one of the most popular drugstore and salon picks for vegan friendly nail polish. Most stores carry the line and nearly every salon has it hand. The brand is cruelty free and was known for being a completely vegan line.;Sadly, that is no longer the case.
On my most recent check-in with Orly the brand confirmed that they are still cruelty free. However, they also let me know that none of their products can be considered vegan.
If youre looking to avoid animal ingredients and animal derived ingredients, I would suggest avoiding Orly polishes. A lot of people are surprised to hear that nail polish can contain these ingredients. The animal ingredients most commonly found in nail polish comes from insects and fish. Thankfully, ;Vegan nail polish is easy to find. NCLA, Flower Beauty, Zoya, SpaRitual, a.dorn, LVX, and ELF are just a handful of the brands out there with a completely vegan nail polish line.

Unfortunately, most nail polishes still include animal-derived ingredients. Some of them are used as a colourant, others are supposed to strengthen your nails, but in reality, they can be replaced with vegan ingredients without compromising on the quality of the nail polish.

; ; Keratin is an animal protein derived from mammals such as cattle, horses, pigs, rabbits, and others. For cosmetic use, it is believed to strengthen the damaged surface of hair, nails and even skin. Even though it provides a healthier appearance, its only a short fix until the keratin washes off.
Luckily, nowadays more and more beauty brands choose to make this change – its easier than ever to find vegan-friendly alternatives to every cosmetic product.

The Product Is Free From Any Animal
This point may seem obvious, and yet sometimes it can be tough to fully understand if the product doesnt have any animal-derived ingredients.;
Some of the cosmetic products clearly state that they, for example, contain milk proteins or even placenta but, unfortunately, its not always so clear. Its likely that even after carefully reading labels, you wont be able to tell if the product is vegan or not many ingredients have specials codes or unusual names that cant be deciphered without further research.;
If this is the case, try to remember a few of the most common animal-derived ingredients and avoid them. You can also use Google search while shopping nowadays the internet is full of useful information about vegan products.; However, its better to stick to the trustworthy sites if you dont want to end up with a non-vegan item.

Avoid Carmine When Selecting Vegan
Carmine is a red colourant found in many nail polishes, lipsticks, and blushers. It looks pretty, but carmine has the ugliest of sources.
Carmine is made from the crushed carcasses of the female cochineal insect. Not only does carmine production involve the death of insects, it’s also apparently sexist!
Anywhere from 80,000 to 100,000 cochineals are used to create just 1 kilogramme of carmine dye. Watch out for carmine dye in red shades of nail polish.

Once youve found a cruelty free brand that you like, next comes the color selection. Its typically shimmery and metallic shades that arent vegan. Its typical for these shimmery shades to contain fish scales to achieve that effect. Unfortunately, these shades wont be labeled in an obvious manner. What you do want to look for is pearl or guanine.

Vegan Nail Polish: How To Tell If Nail Polish Is Vegan
A question I get asked all the time is: Is Nail Polish Vegan?. The short answer is no, not all nail polish is vegan, but the majority of it is. If youre looking for vegan nail polish then you will probably also want it to be cruelty free as well . Ill explain how to determine if a brand is cruelty free and then if a certain nail polish is vegan by looking at the ingredients on the product.
Today, I will only be referring to actual nail polish products, not gels, acrylics or any sort of hand or nail care products . If you are wanting to find a vegan and cruelty free gel, then the only one I recommend is BioSculpture, as I had it on for many years and my natural nails were very healthy underneath.
I tend to use indie nail polish as the brands are cruelty free and the nail polish is typically vegan . I love my aussie indies, so I wrote a post about the active ones in Australia that I can recommend. You can see my list of Aussie indie polish brands in my Guide To Australian Indie Nail Polish blog post. I also listed some cruelty free and non-cruelty free brands there. Some of the cruelty free brands I mentioned that arent indies are China Glaze, Zoya, Wet n Wild, Barry M, ORLY, Color Club, ELF, OCC, Furless, Kester Black, Natio, ULTA3 and Australis.
Are There Vegan Nail Salons
Even though some of the nail polish brands you usually choose at your local nail salon may not be vegan, getting a vegan manicure is easier than youd think. For one thing, there are a selection of vegan and cruelty-free salons all over the world ;for example, Sundays in New York City, and Côte in Los Angeles.
Additionally, your local nail salon may offer a few vegan nail polish options ;just google the brands they have there. Unfortunately, conventional nail salon mainstays Essie and OPI do conduct animal testing and use animal-derived ingredients ;but many salons carry polishes by other brands in smaller quantities, such as ColorClub and Dazzle Dry.
If your favorite nail salon does not carry cruelty-free polishes, you can absolutely bring in your own color . Bonus: when your nails start to chip, youll have the color at home to touch them up.

How Long Does Vegan Nail Polish Last

Well, some of the companies test on animals on their own, most often as a security measurement against potential lawsuits if a customer experiences any threat to their health while using their cosmetics. It may also mean that their products contain harsh chemical ingredients.;
Another reason why some companies test on animals is that they are required by law to do so. For example, any cosmetic product that is imported to mainland China has to be tested on animals. The Chinese cosmetic industry is booming, and many beauty brands choose to take advantage of this market and sell their products.
