What Is Diflucan What Is Lamisil
Diflucan is an antifungal medication used to treat vaginal, oral, and esophageal fungal infections caused by Candida urinary tract infections, peritonitis, pneumonia and disseminated infections caused by Candida cryptococcal meningitis and to prevent Candida infections in patients treated with chemotherapy or radiation after bone marrow transplantation. Diflucan works to prevent growth of fungi by preventing production of the membranes that surround fungal cells. Diflucan is related to clotrimazole , ketoconazole , itraconazole , and miconazole .
Lamisil is an antifungal agent taken by mouth or applied to the skin. Lamisil acts by interfering with the ability of fungi to make chemicals called sterols that are an important part of the membrane that surrounds fungal cells and holds them together. This weakens the cell membrane. Oral terbinafine is more effective for treating fungal nail infections than griseofulvin and itraconazole , two other antifungal agents used for treating fungal nail infections. Lamisil cream, gel, spray, and solution are applied to the skin to treat jock itch, ringworm, and athletes foot.

Why Does It Develop
A fungal nail infection occurs from the overgrowth of fungi in, under, or on the nail. Fungi thrive in warm, moist environments, so this type of environment can cause them to naturally overpopulate. The same fungi that cause jock itch, athletes foot, and ringworm can cause nail infections.
Fungi that are already present in or on your body can cause nail infections. If you have come in contact with someone else who has a fungal infection, you may have contracted it as well. Fungal infections affect toenails more commonly than fingernails, likely because your toes are usually confined to shoes, where theyre in a warm, moist environment.
If you get a manicure or pedicure at a nail salon, be sure to ask how the staff disinfects their tools and how often they do it. Tools, such as emery boards and nail clippers, can spread fungal infections from person to person if theyre not sanitized.
What Is The Best Antifungal Medicine

Rationale For Treating Onychomycosis

It is a common misconception among physicians that as onychomycosis is a cosmetic problem it need not be treated. However, it is clear that onychomycosis can have a significant impact on the quality of life of patients. Problems associated with onychomycosis include discomfort, difficulty in wearing footwear and walking, cosmetic embarrassment and lowered self-esteem. Infected nails may serve as a reservoir of fungi with a potential for spread to the feet, hands and groin. Fungal diseases are contagious and may spread to other family members, if not treated. Onychomycosis can result in disruption of integrity of the skin, providing an entry point for bacteria leading to the development of foot ulcers, osteomyelitis, cellulitis and gangrene in diabetic patients. Furthermore, there can be huge financial implications of neglecting onychomycosis in this group of patients. In addition, the presence of sensitizing fungal/dermatophytic antigens in the nail plate may predispose to other clinical conditions in subjects with onychomycosis. These include asthma/sensitization of the respiratory tract, and skin conditions, such as atopic dermatitis, urticaria and erythema nodosum.
