Mistakes Youre Making When Wearing Gel Nail Polish

How to Remove Gel Nails at Home! Damage-Free!

Chipping a perfectly good manicure is one of lifes most annoying frustrations. Since Im constantly opening packages and typing stories, wearing gel nail polish has been a saving grace when it comes to preserving my mani. While I love the flexibility a regular manicure provides, gel polish is so much more durablewhich is why I tend to stretch each manicure for as long as possible.

With gel polish, your manicure can last from two to three weeks, but with regular polish you’re lucky if it lasts five to seven days without chipping, Kristin Pulaski, owner of Paintbucket Nails in Brooklyn, tells SELF. According to Pulaski, in addition to staying power, another great benefit of gel is that it provides a harder layer of protection over the natural nail, which can result in increased nail growth.

Unfortunately, this durability and protection can be rough on your nails and make them weaker and prone to splitting. No one wants that, so there are a few things to keep in mind to maintain the health of your nails when youre getting gels. We asked Pulaski, celebrity manicurist Skyy Hadley, and Christy Harpring, co-owner of Sea Salt and Sugar Nail Bar in Savannah, Georgia, to clue us in on gel polish mistakes to avoid.

How To File Your Gel Polish Off

  • The first thing you are gonna need to do is use the 100 grit part of your nail file to file away the colored part of your gel manicure
  • Next, once the colored polish has been removed and you can see your natural nails, use the 180 grit part to buff and smooth out your nails.
  • Buffing will also remove most of the base coat
  • Finally, wipe your nails clean with rubbing alcohol and apply some cuticle oil.

If you dont have any tin foil at home or prefer not to use them, there is a way to remove your gel nails.

    What You Will Need:

  • Cuticle Oil
  • Heres How to Remove Gel Nails Without Tin Foil:

  • Using a nail file, file the top coat of your gel nails. Youre not trying to remove the gel. Youre breaking down the top coat of the gel to make it easier for the acetone to soak in later.
  • Pour a small amount of acetone into the small bowl, add just enough to cover your nails when you put them face down into the bowl.
  • Place the small bowl of acetone into the big bowl
  • Pour warm water into the big bowl. The warm water will heat up the acetone, making it remove the gel nails faster. Be warned that acetone is flammable and should not be heated up using a microwave or other methods. Using warm water is the best way to give your acetone a bit of power.
  • Soak your nails in the acetone for 10-15 minutes.
  • Take out your nails, you will notice that some gel has separated from the nail.
  • Use a cuticle spoon to gently scrape off the separated gel. You shouldnt need to use any force here. If there is gel remaining on your nails that cannot be scraped, repeat steps 5 and 6 for a few more minutes on those nails.
  • Once youve scraped off all the gel, wash your hands with a mild soup.
  • Add a few drops of cuticle oil on your nails to restore your nails moisture.
  • Use hand lotion to moisturize your fingertips.
