One of the best things about doing your own gel nails at home is that its cheaper than going to the salonespecially if you get them regularly. Professional gel manicures usually start at $35 , whereas DIY kits start can cost anywhere from $30 to $80 and can be used as frequently as you like.
That said, if youre a total newb when it comes to painting and filing your nails, you might want to leave your gel manis to the pros, since the process does require a steady hand and a decent amount of patience.
What Youll Need To Do Your Own Gel Manicure
Gel nails are a little different from regular nail polish. The polish is made of polymers and monomers that bind and harden only after theyre exposed to UV light. Because of that, you need to have a light source, the special nail polish, as well as a few other must-have manicure tools.

You also need to make sure you use the right LED or UV nail lamp for the correct amount of time.
When the builder gel begins to grow out, you can infill just like you would with acrylic, or remove the set and apply another straight away providing the nail is still in good condition.

To add length and drama, glue on a set of nail tips before applying the gel. Be proactive with your manicurist. Ask if tools are sterilized, and look around to make sure he or she is cleaning and disinfecting tools after every client. In addition, never let your manicurist push or cut your cuticle, as this could lead to inflammation and infection.
Consider traditional nail polish instead of gel polish. This is especially important if you experience recurring nail problems or are allergic to acetone, as acetone is required to remove gel polish.
Dont pick gel nail polish. When the color begins to come off, dont pick at the polish or use other nails or tools to remove it. Instead, make an appointment with your manicurist to have the polish removed.

Two: Cleansing The Nails
Grab a bottle of nail cleanser, nail polish remover, or rubbing alcohol, and dip a small piece of paper towel into the formula. I’m a fan ofOrly’s GelFX 3-in-1 Cleanser as well as Zoya’s Remove Plus Nail Polish Remover. Afterwards, you want to wipe down each nail, making sure to focus on the edges and around the cuticles to remove any excess oils or residue.
Three: Gently Scraping Off Any Residue
Once 15 minutes had passed, the majority of the polish pretty much came off on its own, but to scrape off any excess, the manicurist gave me an alternative to using a traditional metal cuticle pusher. “A wooden stick is more gentle than metal,” she tells me. “You can use a wooden stick to lightly push the gel off your nails instead of scraping with a mental pusher.”

Push Cuticles Down And Apply Cuticle Oil

Hydration is key for nail health. You should be using cuticle oil daily, but particularly in combination with gel polish.
Use a cuticle pusher to push your cuticles back and make more of your nail visible. Use it to also remove dead skin from your nail plate and to help maintain even cuticles.
Then, apply cuticle oil to nourish the skin surrounding your nails.One thing to be careful of is not to apply oil too late in the process. If there is any oily residue still on your nails when you apply polish, the base coat will have trouble adhering.
One: Filing Down The Polish
Once we were ready to get started, the nail expert instructed me to take the file from the kit and swipe it across the nail bed where the polish was still present excluding the grow out areas making sure to only go in one direction, rather than back and forth. The goal here is only to break down the top layer of polish, without hitting the natural nail.

Please note: For each of the below steps, I would recommend that you go through them one hand at a time doing 5 nails on one hand first. You can then simply repeat the process for your other hand.
Step One: To begin your gel manicure, you should first make sure that your nails are clean and free of old polish and any dirt.
You want to ensure that they are well-groomed. This includes pushing your cuticles back following the shape and giving the nail plate a very light buff.
This is going to add a little texture for the gel to grab onto and to take hold. Just make sure you stop once your nail starts to turn whitish
Step Two: After you have prepped and cleaned each and every one of your nails, use a lint-free wipe and rubbing alcohol to cleanse the nail.
This is going to remove any debris and oils from your nail which are things that cause your Mani to not last as long.
If you have particularly oily nails, or if you often have trouble with polish or Gel lasting, I recommend using a Nail Primer. This particular one dries sticky which really helps the gel grab onto the natural nail.
With the primer, I like to just apply it in the areas of concern like around the cuticle, the sides, and the tip.
Now a quick warning from my experience if your primer is heavy-duty, if youre wanting to remove your gel sooner than a week maybe skip this step because it seems like the longer its on, the harder the removal process is.
Step Five: So now its time to apply your color gel.

What makes gel extensions the superior in this situation is that its not only made of gel for long-wear and durability, but it doesnt require any harsh chemicals. There are plenty of benefits, including no damage to your natural nails, the tips are lightweight, there are no fumes, strong odors, and heavy filing. When my clients remove their gel extensions, their natural nails are longer and stronger, Seney adds. When you get acrylic tips, the removal process involves drilling, soaking, and filing. With gel extensions, you remove them by simply soaking your nails in acetone, and the gel tips dissolve. You dont have to worry about gel extensions preventing you from doing your everyday tasks, either. The gel tips are pretty strong, so you can do normal daily things without being worried your nail will pop off or lift. I tell my clients try not to touch too much-rubbing alcohol or acetone, Seney adds, as alcohol and acetone can weaken the gel tip.

Is Builder Gel Better Than Acrylic
As a nail tech, you will probably have your fair share of clients asking you whether builder gel is better for their nails than acrylic.
However, it can be hard to answer this question as it is often a case of personal preference.
For example, builder gel might not appear to be as hard as acrylic, but it is more flexible and can actually be stronger. For more natural looking nails, builder gel is often preferred over acrylic as it can be applied quickly with a high-shine finish. Gel is also great for helping clients with easily broken nails maintain their natural nail length.
Many clients also believe that gel nails will damage their nails less than acrylic nails. The flexibility of builder gel does mean that they are less likely to cause a breakage. If you use a soak off formula, you can minimise damage during the removal, too, as less filing and buffing will be needed.
However, thats not to say that acrylic is particularly bad for nails! If clients have really soft nails, acrylics can offer a suit of armour to protect them. So long as they are applied, cared for and removed properly by a trained nail technician, gels and acrylics should be equally safe.
If your client still cant decide which to go with, keep some pictures of your best work handy to show them the different looks you can create with them.
But, which do nail techs prefer?
Other nail techs simply prefer working with acrylic, particularly if they have clients who love having their nails extra-long.
How Are Gel Extensions Applied
- Step 1: Prep the nails. The nail tech will file the clients nails, push cuticles back, trim dead cuticles, and buff nails. The nails must be clean before application.
- Step 2: Find the right size. Take each finger and find the correct size tip that fits. All the nails in the kit have numbers to compare.
- Step 3: Depending on your nail techs skill level, file the inside of the nail tips or apply a layer of acetone.
- Step 4: Apply bonder liquid to natural nails. Bonder is a dehydrator and you want to make sure your natural nails are as dry as possible with no oils or debris.
- Step 5: Apply primer liquid to natural nails. Primer makes your nails sticky so that its easier for the gel to attach.
- Step 6: Apply a thin layer of extend gel to the natural nails.
- Step 7: Put your hand in the UV/LED lamp for 60 seconds.
- Step 8: Apply some gel to the tips. Make sure the clients hand is straight. Apply the gel tip to the natural nail, and press down. As one hand is holding the tip on the client’s hand, take your other hand holding a handheld LED light shine it directly on the nail for 30 seconds. Then have the client place her hand inside the UV/LED lamp for 60 seconds.
- Step 9: Repeat on all fingers
- Step 10: All done!
