Normal-concentration acetone, also known as room-temp acetone, and ultra-concentrated acetone are two distinct varieties of acetone. This is the very concentrated one we’re referring to.

Getting Started With Your Diy Gel Nails:
First off, we want to start off with CLEAN, DEHYDRATED nails. I cant stress this enough! One of the biggest issues when it comes to gel polish not lasting is natural oils on the nail plate, so wash those hands and cleanse your nails with 100% pure acetone.
For this set we shaped the nails to a soft square. Youll want to use a nail file that has 180 GRIT. This is going to be soft enough to file the free edge of your nail without roughing it up too much, but it also has enough grit to where you can use it to gently buff the top of your nail plate so the gel polish will properly adhere. Make sure you do gently file over the whole nail so the polish sticks! It should look white and chalky.
One of the common misconceptions is that you should use a soft buffer to smooth over the nail plate, but if your nail is too smooth the gel will peel right off. Using the right grit and a nail file prolongs the longevity of your mani by a long shot!

Diy Gel Nails: What You Need
- A lamp

The Importance Of A Good Base Coat:
Another misconception with gel nails is if your base coat is too thick, itll peel. Not true! As long as youve prepped your nail correctly, a thicker base will actually add strength to the nail. This base coat is by far one of my favorites and the consistency is perfect for a thicker base. I apply it by starting with scrubbing a small amount into the nail plate, then floating a bead of the gel over the whole nail to add strength.
You can also clean up any mistakes by using a small gel nail brush! Cure the base coat in an LED gel lamp for 60 seconds.
Once the base is cured, apply 2 coats of your desired color and cure both of them for 30 seconds in your lamp. To get close to the cuticle you can slightly wiggle the product up with the brush. We used Presto #137 and in my opinion, this is one of the best gel polish lines out there. Super opaque colors that dont shrink, wrinkle, or pull away from the cuticles after applying. What more could you want?!

One: Filing Down The Polish
Once we were ready to get started, the nail expert instructed me to take the file from the kit and swipe it across the nail bed where the polish was still present excluding the grow out areas making sure to only go in one direction, rather than back and forth. The goal here is only to break down the top layer of polish, without hitting the natural nail.
Four: Choose Your Polish
I went with Orly’s GelFX Kiss the Bride shade, a soft baby pink. Using the same steps Boyce suggested above, I started off painting one thin layer on my thumb, curing it for 30 seconds this time, then moving onto my other fingers. Gently Remove The Polish
Remove the foil and lift up the cotton balls to see whats going on with your nails. Some of the layers should be lifted at this point, but you can almost guarantee that there will be some polish left, hanging on for dear life.
If you cant rub the polish off with the acetone-soaked cotton balls, then you can grab a cuticle stick or pusher and use it to gently lift the gel layer off.

Why Not Just Buy A Starter Kit
Gel starter kits are available through makers like Sally Hansen for around $50, but here’s why I chose to assemble my own kit instead:
–The kits usually come with MINI sizes of your essentials, like base coat and top coat. I didn’t want to pay all that money only to run out of supplies quickly.
–I read a number of reviews complaining that the LED lamps that come in kits were not high quality and quit working soon after purchase. I wanted more control over the quality of lamp I was getting, and preferred the versatility of a UV lamp.
–Kits tend to come with one shade of color polish, and usually a color I would never wear, like “nude” or “classic red”. Buying separately meant I could get a full size bottle of teal, black, plum, or whatever I wanted that I’d actually wear.
–Kits come with crap you don’t need, like “finishing wipes”. This is basically just an alcohol pad, and chances are you have the makings already in your bathroom cabinet.
While the grand total for my basics may cost a little more than $60, I have greater faith in the products I chose and know they will serve me longer and more effectively than a kit.
Push Back The Cuticles & Buff Your Nails
Apply a cuticle remover on your cuticles and then push back each cuticle with a metal or wood cuticle pusher. If you have tough cuticles then you can soak them in warm water to soften them for one to two minutes before you push back your cuticles. Next, you buff your nails to increase gel adhesion to your nail!

Cut And File Your Nails

Start With Clean & Trimmed Nails:
File your nails to the shape you want then use a nylon brush to dust off your nails. Make sure you have no lingering nail polish anywhere on your nails. If you leave any polish on then you will end up with a bumpy manicure, which is never good! Use a nail cleanser to clean the nail so the Gel will stick better. CND Scrubfresh is one of my favorites because it de-contaminates the nail and improves adhesion in one simple step.
Start With Prepped Nails + Prep Your Space
Make sure your nails are cleaned, filed, dried, and free of any residue/lotion/oils. Buff and shape the nails before starting. Wipe clean with rubbing alcohol or acetone.
Prep your workspace by laying down a towel and having a paper towel on hand. Pour a small amount of acetone into the cap of the bottle or into a small dish. Set out your polishes in the order youll use them and get your nail lamp plugged in and ready to go.

Tips For Applying Gel Polish At Home
- Shake, shake, shake your polish before application to make sure it mix well. A good shake make your application easier. Invest in a good nail polish shaker.
- The purpose for applying nail bonder is to ensure optimal performance by increasing the bonding between natural nails and the gel polish. If you feel that your application doesn’t last as long as it should be, try using a nail bonder.
- Get yourself a nice and handy cuticle oil, like CND Solar Oil or Gelish Nourish Oil, because you often need to keep the nails moisturized as using gel polish can be dehydrating.
- Any brand of 36-watt UV Lamp or LED light works. The professional LED light that can cure 5 fingers at the same time is preferable. With UV Lamp you have to change the bulbs regularly and takes more time to cure. With LED lamp, you don’t need to change the bulbs, it last longer and cure in a shorter amount of time.
- If you are concerned with UV Light exposure you can apply sunblock on hands or wear the UV Lamp fingerless gloves before application.
- If you find out that your gel polish is thick, use gel polish thinner before application. This is a recommended product to save your gel polish life.
