Remove The Old Dip Powder Nails

This is the longest part of the process, mostly because I didn’t have a clue as to what I was doing. After seeing my wife’s nails get ruined with cleaning supplies, I assumed straight acetone would chew right through the old nails. The two internet tutorials that I watched on this process also GREATLY exaggerated how fast this process was. The order that I’m going to put down is not the order that I went with but would probably provide the fastest results.

Step 1: Mechanically remove as much of the old powder as you can.

As you can see in the first photo, soaking the nails doesn’t work as well as I was led to believe. So, go straight to mechanical methods. Turn your drill on and get to filing! Don’t worry about getting clear down to the nail in this step, just remove what you feel like makes sense. I could have removed more but decided against it because I don’t have a clue as to what I’m doing and preferred to not have a story that started out with “hey, remember that one time that you sanded my nail off?”

Step 2: Acetone Wrap

Cut 10 large aluminum foil squares. Dip your cotton balls in the acetone, place it on the nail, and wrap it in foil. Twist the ends so that it looks like you know what you’re doing. Let it sit for about 5-10 minutes. Remove one foil cap at a time and rub the nail with the cotton ball, re-soaking as needed.

Step 3: Acetone bath and scrub

Prime And Apply Dipping Powder Color

I think this is the easiest part of the whole thing. There’s some finesse involved in it but most of that comes from knowing how to paint nails in the first place . I’ll provide tips as I go along.

Sorry for the lack of pictures, you sort of have to move quick on some of these steps and they also take two hands.

In this dipping powder kit, there are five bottles. Let’s go over them:

  • Primer – I think it is a nail conditioner, it didn’t smell like any sort of glue.
  • Base Coat – I’m pretty sure this is just a very thinned down CA glue meant to penetrate the nail and provide a plastic surface for the color to bond to.
  • Applicator – It’s basically superglue . All it does is soften the plastic powder and bind it all together to make it look like one smooth surface.
  • Brush cleaner – super glue remover. it evaporates super fast and smells nice so I’m going to guess that it’s alcohol based. You’ll want to clean your applicator brush with it
  • Top Coat – It is what it says that it is. The brush SUCKS, I doubt that’ll you’ll get more than two uses out of it.
  • Step 1: Apply Primer

Honestly, I was really hoping this nail polish was the easy alternative to beautiful shiny gel nails. They claimed it was shiny like gel and long lasting. Unfortunately, I struck out on this one too. It acted like normal nail polish for me, so it chipped quite easily and quickly.

Dip powder manicures are longer-lasting than their gel counterparts , and they also dont require any UV light to harden. They also yield similar, even-coated results as acrylic manicuresbut since there is no harsh UV light or fake nail tips involved, dip powder manis are also said to be less damaging to your nails in the long-term.

    Benefits Of Dip Powder Nails

DIY dip powder nails have been my go to nail for all of 2020. Due to the above reasons, Ive been doing my own dip nails for almost a year now.

I always get compliments on them. The nails are not brittle, nor do they chip. My nails actually grow extremely long with dip powder and dont get damaged whatsoever. In fact, I have the same long nails I used to have with acrylic tips, except they are my REAL nails! People are always shocked when I tell them theyre my actual nail.

My dip powder nails are shiny and they look professional, clean, and classy.

Using a coarse nail file , rough up the surface of the dip enhancement. Be very careful to avoid your natural nail and cuticle to prevent damage. Thin it out as much as you can. The thinner the layers, the more easily acetonecoming in the next stepwill penetrate.

Resist the urge to cut your nails before you start removing.

HOW TO DO DIP POWDER NAILS AT HOME

If you are worried about your nail health, don’t fret: dip powder won’t ruin your nails, but scraping and picking the manicure off will. Chipping away at your nails with a nail stick removes layers of your natural bed, weakening your nails.

Instead, to remove dip powder nail polish, stick to the same removal process as gel: dip a cotton pad in acetone and allow it to sit on your nails for 10 to 15 minutes before wiping the color away. If your manicure doesn’t budge after 15 minutes, let your nails soak in polish remover a bit longer. Don’t forget to add a moisturizer to your nails when you are all done!

The cons dont really outweigh the pros, and even if they are about even, most professionals will say that this option seems to be one that will remain for years to come. Because the process is so simple and straightforward, and capable of being done well by experts and novices alike, it is important that we focus I on that one negative the removal process. This is to ensure that it is done properly, safely and without harming the nails.

    What To Look For

Just as with any nail service, youll want quality products that ensure lasting, consistent results. Check the;consistency of the powder. Powder should be free flowing, says Luu. This is crucial because it allows for an even and clean application, which can shorten service time since it cuts down on buffing and filing. Read the;activator cure time. When you look at dip systems, they generally use a similar application process, but the activator cure time can vary, which will affect your application, says Sritapan. Seek out;vivid pigments, says Vu Nguyen, Gelish dean of education, but always make sure the pigment is well blended for consistency.

    • Time: 3 Hours
    • Difficulty: Very Hard
    • Lasts: 2-3 weeks

This is the technique where the white tips are glued to the tip of your nail with both a pink and white acrylic applied.

I kid you not. This technique is EXTREMELY difficult. The nail professionals make it look so easy, but its definitely not. I was determined to learn, but I finally decided that keeping all my hair was more important. =)

Its been a few years since Ive tried this technique again, but I had tried for several months and wasnt able to achieve the professional look I wanted. Id still recommend going to the nail salon for this type of nails, unless you have a lot of patience.

However, I do have a way to achieve the same look using dip, which can be found in my nail dip tutorial.

    Manicure Dipping Powder Near Me

I get a lot of questions about how to do dip nails at home. The process is actually really easy if you have a steady hand and requires way less equipment than gel nails.

How To Do Dip Nails At Home: The Process

For dip nails at home, you will first need to buff your nails and do your regular manicure however you please. Once youre done, youll do a base coat and let it dry.

At this point, you can start working with the dip powder. Youll paint a coat of nail polish on, dip your nail in the powder dip, shake it off, and let it dry.

It doesnt take long at all for dip nails to dry, so once youre done with one hand, you can go right over and add the second coat. I like to do 3 coats to make sure the dip powder is thick enough.

Once youre done, youll do a final top coat. After its dry, you will then file down the nail until it looks natural. I find that it especially helps to file your dip nails on the side so theyre not too thick, but I like to leave the thickness in the middle. Dont worry about ruining the top coat: thats the point!

Once your nails look 100% natural, you can use your final top coat. This top coat will take a bit to dry but dries quicker than regular nail polish.

And thats exactly how to do dip nails at home, easy and simple! You dont need a UV light and will find that this is an easy process to do while watching Netflix or listening to music.

Remove The Dip Powder Very Carefully

Avoid aggressively buffing your nails or attempting to peel off dip powder with a sharp nail file, lest you want to suffer severe nail damage or âgreeniesâ , warns Sritapan. âThere is no cure for greenies or nail damage except for waiting three-plus months for the nail to grow out.â Instead, start by shortening your nails as preferred, and then filing the nail surface with as thin a file as possible, says Ogawa. âThis process makes it easier to soak off.â Next, soak a cotton pad in pure acetone, gently wrap it around the nail, and then cover it in foil or the plastic removal clips that may come with your kit. Consider placing nails under a mini steamer while theyâre soaking, suggests Honey, as pure acetone can feel uncomfortable. From there, wait 15 to 20 minutes before removing everything. Any remaining residue can be removed with a cuticle pusher or nail file.

    Follow The Application Process

The application process varies from kit to kit , but for the most part, youâll start by painting each nail with a base coat, which is usually made of a glue-like ingredient called cyanoacrylate, explains Darlene Sritapan, OPIâs North America Education and Capability Manager. âPrecise application is required,â she adds. Paint in thin, outward strokes, avoiding the cuticle area. Next, while nails are wet, dip each one into the colored powder until fully coated. Tap lightly to remove any excess powder. Repeat this process until youâre satisfied with the color; twice will usually do the trick. Then, apply an activator or sealant to nails. âThis is going to dry everything,â says Honey. After about five minutes or so , apply one or two layers of top coat. âBe sure to check the length and shape before applying,â adds Ogawa.

Are Powder Dipped Nails Better Than Gel

The biggest difference between gel and dip powder is longevity. Dip powder manicures can last up to a month, which is twice as long as gel nail polish. Also, dip powder manicures don’t require light curing lamps. That means you won’t have a bulky nail lamp taking up space in your closets or drawers, and you won’t have to deal with UV exposure.

Once the dip loosens and begins to flake, take the metal pusher or orangewood stick and lightly scrape off the polish, starting from the cuticle area to the end of your nail. “The dip should come off without applying too much pressure on your nail bed,” says Monserrat Rodriguez, nail artist and owner of Shears and Laque nail salon in Rancho Cucamonga, California.

What If You Are Worried About Acetone

You can shop around to find if a product line allows you to remove the treatment with regular nail polish remover, rubbing alcohol or even distilled vinegar . Alternately, you may find that using a slow drying nail polish can allow you to soften the coating and then rub away most of the treatment.

Do keep in mind that the longer you have worn a single treatment, the longer the soak required to remove it. As one expert said, The longer you leave on the polishthe more difficult it will be take off. It may be 15 minutes if you take them off the same day, but if you wait two weeks or four weeks, it could take 30 minutes.

Dip Nails Vs Gel: Whats The Difference

    Dip nails and gel nails are done completely differently.;

Gel nails are painted then hardened using a lamp, while dip nails are painted, dipped, and then harden on their own. No light is used.

Both dip nails and gel nails will last about 2-3 weeks, depending on your nail growth.

One huge difference for me is that gel nails tend to crack or chip after 2 weeks, while dip nails are;incredibly strong and thick. Theyll last as long as you want and you wont need to get them redone until your nails grow out.

The reason I choose dip nails over gel nails is;because dip nails are so strong. My natural nails tend to break very quickly , but dip nail polish is so strong that it allows my nails to grow without breaking.

As long as I take the dip powder off and do my nails again immediately, they have a clear chance to grow. I have honestly never had nails this long that are 100% natural!

While my nails were growing out, I asked my nail technician to use gel tips. These tips sit on the very edge of the nail and create the exact length that you want. They fall off easily with gel nails, but dip nails are strong and protect the gel tips from breaking.

Once your nails are the appropriate length, you can stop using gel tips and can work with your own nails.

    Dip nails and gel nails are removed in the same way, using a bit of acetone and tinfoil or nail clips. The removal process takes about 15-20 minutes, but your nails will still be in good shape if its done correctly.;
