How To Do Your Nails At Home

Doing Your Own Gel Nails Step

Paint Your Nails PERFECTLY At Home!

Once you have all of your tools prepared, its time to get started! Get situated somewhere comfortable, and maybe put on a TV show in the background. If youre doing your own nails, we recommend working on one hand at a time. If you have a friend to help you, however, you can speed up the process by having them paint one hand while the other is in the lamp.

  • Clean and Shape

You want to start every manicure by first washing your hands and filing them into a shape that you like. If you wish, you can also push back your cuticles or use a cuticle remover.

  • Buff

Then, your next move should be to rough up your nails a little with one of the medium-rough sides of a nail buffer . Youll want to buff the nail plate directly until the natural shine is gone from your nail. Dont buff so much that you damage the nail but just enough so the gel polish has a textured surface that it can grip.

  • Prep

With your nails cleaned and shaped, you still need to do a little more prep. Any oil, dust, or dirt on your nails is going to create a gap that can cause your gel nails to slide off or chip later on. Using isopropyl alcohol or an adhesion enhancer, wipe down your nails to make sure theyre totally clean and dry.

  • Base Coat

Next, apply a very thin layer of your base coat to each nail. Be very careful not to get any of the base coat on your skin or on your cuticles, as that can hurt the seal over your nails. If you do get some on your cuticles, wipe it off with a cotton swab.

Though many of us continue to practice social distancing, you may still find yourself in need of a nail refresh. With nail salons operating at limited hours and capacity, it can be tough to get the results you’re used to when taking care of your nails at home.

Celebrity manicurist Tom Bachik whose clients include Jennifer Lopez and Kim Kardashian near the beginning of Covid-19, so Shop TODAY reached out to find out exactly what manicure tools he recommends using.

Some of the products he uses are professional-grade or require a license to purchase, but he provided us with affordable and easy-to-find alternatives to help you do your nails at home.

Considered one of his most important tools, this cuticle conditioner mixes together three natural oils with vitamin E to soften cuticles and condition and strengthen nails.

For a longer-lasting manicure, Bachik also advises using Isopropyl alcohol before applying your base coat to cleanse the nail and remove any oils and contaminants that can interfere with adhesion before polishing.

Applying Poly Gel To Dual Forms

Compared to what the professionals use, Poly Gel is a little thicker, but its otherwise very similar. Heres how to create your extensions with it, using solid dual forms.

Poly Gel kits are usually sold with hard dual forms, which is why this is the method we explain. You can also use Poly Gel with sticky nail forms, mostly following the process in the next section. The only difference is that you would need to dip your brush in alcohol to move the Poly Gel around since its not as fluid as self-leveling gel.

When was the last time you had your nails professionally done? Personally, its been a while.

I love the post-salon look of freshly primed and polished nails, but I cant help but wonder whats in my polish, and my body, when all is said and done. The good news is that if you know how to do a natural manicure the right way, you can still make your nails look tamed and polished, without the chemical-laden ingredients that most nail salons rely on.

If you want pretty nails without the polish, heres how to do a natural manicure at home in just 7 little steps.

    Apply Your Colour In Stages

How to DIY Acrylic Nails at Home

Now for the fun part: Apply a coat of your colour of choice, being sure to get the brush all the way down to the cuticle and into the corners of your nail. Maximum coverage on the first coat makes the second coat a breeze. Just keep the layer thin. “Many of us overload the brush and do too many strokes,” Nails Inc. founder Thea Green says. “The key is to load just enough polish on the brush to cover the nail in one coat.” She recommends striping your nail three times: once down the middle, once on each side. Another trick that helps: Try a polish handle, like The Poppy from Olive & June, to keep your hand steadier as you paint. After a nice full two minutes , apply the second coat of nail polish. Sheer or pastel shades may require a third coat for full, seamless coverage, but remember: thick layers may cover your nails more quickly, but they’re also more likely to end up with imprints or chips, so keep stick to nice and thin coats.

    Trim Nails And Hang Nails

If youre wearing nail polish, go ahead and take it off with nail polish remover and then wash your hands. If youd prefer to skip the acetone remover, we cover all the different ways you can remove nail polish without remover here.

Using small nail scissors or nail clippers, clean up any ragged skin around the nail and clip away any hangnails. If your nails are different lengths, even them out so theyre all roughly the same.

Dont go too crazy here you just want to clean things up a bit. And whatever you do, dont trim your cuticles like they do at the salon. In my experience, when they grow out youre left with a big ol ratty mess, and maybe even an infection to boot.

What Youll Need To Do Your Own Gel Manicure

Gel nailsare a little different from regular nail polish. The polish is made of polymers and monomers that bind and harden only after theyre exposed to UV light. Because of that, you need to have a light source, the special nail polish, as well as a few other must-have manicure tools.

We highly recommend purchasing a gel nail kit, like the Gel Polish Pro Kit from Red Carpet Manicure. The kit includes an LED lamp designed specifically to cure gel nail polish, a red LED nail polish, a base coat, a topcoat, a polish remover, a pre-manicure cleaning solution, an adhesion-improving nail dehydrating liquid, and cuticle oil.

Alternatively, you can always purchase an LED light and nail polishes separately, along with an acetone-based polish remover, isopropyl alcohol, and a special gel base coat, and a topcoat.

Finally, youll also need a few tools just to help you achieve a great manicure! These include a nail buffer, cotton swabs, cotton pads, and maybe even a cuticle remover if you want to go all out.

    One: Remove Excess Length

The first step is to remove most of the length. “Make sure to not clip your actual nail. The best way to clip is with an acrylic nail cutter but if you don’t have that, you can use large toenail clippers which typically provides more strength,” says Lee. “Start clipping at one side and work your way to the other, never clipping straight on.”

Then grab two nail files, a rough one for the top later of acrylic and one with higher grit as you make your way closer to your natural nail. “Keep gently filing until the shine of the nail is gone. This may take some patience,” says Lee. Just beware of buffing too much. “Over-buffing the nail to try and get the remaining pieces off can thin out and weaken the nail,” she adds.

Doing Your Own Gel Nails At Home: A Complete Guide

    STEP 1:

If you have gel polish on already, you need to cut your cotton pads into 4 pieces, and soak each of them with acetone. Buff the top of each nail, then cover your nail with the cotton pad and then apply the nail polish soak off clip to hold it in place. Keep it there for 15 minutes. This is a great time to watch a good show on TV!

    STEP 2:

Remove the clips and begin scraping off the gel polish with the steel cuticle remover and scraper. The polish should be lifting up and it shouldnt be too difficult to remove at this point. If it is, apply another cotton pad with acetone for a bit longer.

    STEP 3:

Apply the cuticle remover liquid onto your cuticles and rub in. Use the the steel cuticle remover and scraper to push down your cuticles and scrape them off your nail. Use the cuticle clipper to cut off the cuticles from your nail.

    STEP 4:

Clip your nails to the length that you want them, use the nail file to shape them, and buff the tops of your nails to take off a bit of the top layer of your nail. This will help the gel polish to adhere to your nails better.

    STEP 5:

Rinse your hands with water and remove all of the dead skin and dry well. Make sure the nails are completely clean. Paint on the PH Bond to help dry out of your nails.

    STEP 6:

    STEP 7:

    STEP 8:

Dont You Ever Get Manicures In A Salon

But wait a second, Mary, Ive seen you on instastories getting your nails done before! Absolutely. Im not saying I never get my nails done. Youre all well aware of how much I love Glamsquad, and having their in-home offerings every month or two is one of my favorite treats. I actually love these appointments as a way of maintaining proper cuticle maintenance with a professional trimming, which isnt necessary for me every single time, but rather just every 2nd or 3rd manicure. Also, getting your nails done is always a fun, relaxing self-care moment and certainly something I like to indulge in every now and then.

Right now, however, with the coronavirus pandemic keeping everyone at home, going to the nail salon is absolutely not an option. But, outside of global health crises putting all of us on lockdown, there are also times when you simply cant make it to the salon. When you have a busy schedule, work full-time and/or have kids, regular nail salon appointments arent always realistic. You also maybe just dont feel like dropping $100+ on your nails every few weeks. Whatever your reasoning, learning to do your own gel manicures is a skill that will pay off.
