When Should I Treat My Lawn For Fungus

How To Get Rid Of Rust Disease/Fungus In The Lawn

Lawn fungicide or fungus control can be applied to the lawn after brown patch has appeared, but it is best to take preventative action and begin applying fungus control for the duration of the summer months. We recommend beginning lawn fungicide applications when nighttime low temperatures rise to 60°F.

How Many Times To Spray Lawn Fungus

The weather conditions will determine the exact answer to this, however, in general, most lawn fungicides need to be applied every 14 to 21 days throughout the most active growth period for the lawn fungus youre dealing with. Most lawn fungus infections occur in the late spring and the summer but this is, again, weather dependent. Fungus spreads rapidly in hot and wet conditions.

Symptoms Of Necrotic Ring Spot

A lawn with the NRS fungus will have brown spots with the texture of healthy grass. Its not dry and brittle. The ideal conditions for NRS include cool and moist conditions, between 55 and 83 degrees Fahrenheit, although symptoms may more readily be apparent in summer heat or drought conditions.

Frequently, the turf will survive the infection and re-grow in the center of the patches, giving them a ring-like frog eye appearance. In the spring, rings may appear as just a light green color. Other symptoms may include depressions in the soil where rings are present, easily-pulled roots or Hyphae in the roots, which makes the plant more prone to environmental factors.

How Do Mushrooms Reproduce And Spread

Mushrooms spread via spores. Spores are tiny reproductive cells that are released by the mushroom, carried on the wind. They land and start new mushroom colonies. UCLA researcher, , explains that mushrooms create their own wind to help spread their spores. Mushrooms allow their moisture to evaporate, which creates both cool air and water vapor around the mushroom. This gives the spores enough lift to spread out. The mushrooms natural wind can carry the spores as much as four inches up and out.

In dry times or stressful seasons, spores can go dormant and wait until the conditions are right to start growing new mushrooms and colonies.

How To Treat Leaf Spot Disease

Leaf Spot Disease can be prevented by ensuring that you dont cut your grass too low. Long, thick-bladed grass is more resistant to damage to the grass blades. Adding nitrogen to soil during a leaf spot infection can entirely kill an area affected by leaf spot. Avoid overwatering infected grass and aerate the soil in order to promote water drainage during rainy conditions. Fungicides are an option for treating leaf spot, but they are only effective when applied to infected lawns during the diseases initial stage. If a fungicide is applied during the melting out stage, it will have little to no effect. Optimally, fungicides should be applied once in the early spring and again in late spring.

Make Your Grass Healthier

A healthy lawn is able to fend off disease better. These issues should be amended:

  • Compacted soil makes it difficult for roots to grow deeply, which puts your grass at risk of being weak and susceptible to disease.
  • Watering problems include: overwatering, watering too often with less water, and not watering at all. Proper watering is crucial for deep roots that can prevent lawn disease.
  • You will also need to make sure youre not damaging the grass during mowing. Keep your blade sharp, and make sure that youre only cutting off no more than one-third its length at a time.
  • Lawn can choke out disease and weeds when there is more grass than your lawn can handle. Overseeding can be a great way to fight off weeds and other issues, which in turn will lead to a healthier lawn.
  • If you have a thick layer of thatch, it can block the sun so that the grass has a difficult time growing and getting rid of excess water. The lawn disease brown back, for example, loves places with a lot of thatch.
  • Stop using your current lawnmower. It likely has the fungus on the blades and will simply spread it again.
  • Different diseases require different solutions. Explore our free Lawn Disease Library to help identify the fungus that is plaguing your yard.

Many conditions can cause patches of brown, dead grass on your lawn, but only one gets the official namebrown patch.” Brown patch disease is a condition caused by a Rhizoctonia fungus, usually Rhizoctonia solani. The fungus often appears in mid- to late-summer when the weather is hot and humid. Brown patch is a foliar disease, meaning that it harms the blades of grass but not the crown of the plant or the root system. Grass plants affected by brown patch may recover on their own, without chemical intervention.

Rhizoctonia can affect all cool-season lawn grasses, but it is especially harmful to ryegrass and tall fescue. Kentucky bluegrass and fine fescues can occasionally be affected, but the damage is usually minimal in these species. Brown patch can also affect a variety of warm-season grasses, including St. Augustine grass and zoysiagrass.

How To Prevent Lawn Fungus In The First Place

Unfortunately, a lot of times turf disease is beginning to fester before homeowners realize it and they make the problem worse. Watering habits and mowing habits are two practices that can ultimately have a pretty big impact on disease.

For one, it is recommended that you water early in the morning which gives the sun time to dry your lawn out. When you water in the evening hours, that water sits on the lawn and creates a habitat that can breed fungal growth.

Mowing habits also make a difference. You should keep your mower blades sharp and clean in order to prevent spreading disease. If you are utilizing a professional lawn mowing service and they are not cleaning their mower deck after each lawn , they could be spreading disease from one lawn to another.

In addition to certain cultural practices, you can also invest in preventative care. At Master Lawn, our Gold Program includes preventive turf disease treatments already built-in, allowing you to put disease worries out of your mind.

Given the severity of some of these diseases, a proactive approach is ideal so that you never even give these menaces the chance to wreak havoc.

Ways To Treat Brown Patch And Lawn Fungus

Despite all the recent rain, many lawns are covered in random brown patches. The reason? Too much rain. Extremely wet grass promotes fungus growth and can actually harm your lawn.

Here are 8 ways to treat brown patch and lawn fungus:

    1. Only water your lawn as much as necessary. Avoid watering at night, as this is when fungus tends to grow.

    2. Avoid walking over brown patches and affected areas. Fungal diseases can easily spread.

    3. Fertilize your lawn. Grass that does not receive enough nitrogen and potassium can become weak, leaving the grass vulnerable to fungal diseases.

    4. Mow your lawn at a healthy height. Never cut your lawn on the lowest setting.

    5. Be patient. Give the fertilizer time to work.

    6. Keep leaves off your lawn. Leaves can promote fungus growth.

    7. Keep an eye on shady areas. When especially wet, these areas are first to show signs of brown patch or fungus.

    8. Apply a fungicide. If you simply cant battle the brown spots with any of the 7 steps listed above, go to your local home improvement store and purchase a fungicide. While costly, this will help battle the lawn fungus.natural treatments can be used instead, especially while the fungus is still small. Neem oil, compost tea, and baking soda solutions are some of the most common.

I Have Mushrooms In My Lawn That Are In A Circle What Are These

These half circles of mushrooms/toadstools are known as fairy rings or pixie rings, says Amateur Gardening expert John Negus. They can be complete circles or arcs and are caused by fungus that feeds on the roots of grass causing browning. There may be lush green growth adjacent to the brown arcs or circles. The fungi is hidden below ground for most of the year, with the toadstools or mushrooms appearing in late summer and into fall. Unfortunately, it is very difficult to eradicate fairy rings and there are no chemical methods available.

To control Fairy ring fungus efficiently, dig out the affected dead grass to 3ft deep and 1ft 6in on either side of the ring. Then replace spoil with uncontaminated soil and then reseed or re-turf. This is a big job, with no guarantee of eradication, as the roots may have spread beyond the dead circle. If this is the route you choose to go down, there are lots of useful tips on how to plant grass seed and how to lay turf in our dedicated guides.

An easier and almost as effective alternative is to aerate the dead patch with a garden fork to a depth of 10in , then water it with dilute detergent to remove waterproof resins from the soil particles, continues John. Rain will then penetrate. Finally, scarify the area and overseed it with a lawn thickener blend. Hopefully, new growth will cover the bald ring and the disease wont recur.

    Is Lawn Fungus Treatment Effective

For the treatment to be effective, it is important that the person applying the treatment use the correct lawn fungus treatment. Contact fungicides do not penetrate the blades. Therefore, they must remain on the surface of the leaf blade for about 3-8 days to be effective. The primary purpose of contact fungicides is to form a barrier, which prevents fungus from entering the leaves, so it typically should be applied before the disease begins.

Systemic fungicides will enter the grass blade and go to the roots so, they work from the inside out. This type of fungicide is longer lasting than contact fungicides. This kind of treatment does require watering for the fungicide to reach the roots. One of the main disadvantages with systemics is the chance the disease will develop a resistance to the fungicide.

It is important to keep in mind that some fungicides can be dangerous to the environment. They can be especially dangerous if the user does not use it correctly. So, if you are not experienced with fungicides, it is a good idea to contact a local lawn care service. They will be able to evaluate the problem areas and apply the appropriate lawn fungus treatment.
