How To Apply Gel Over Acrylic Nails

Always start clean. Begin by applying the acrylics as normal. Then, buff them until they lose all of their shine. Lastly, apply the gel polish according to the instructions it came with or the general instructions below.

The first step to any manicure is to start clean.

Make sure that youve washed your hands well, that your tools and work area are spotless, and that your products are all in-date and good.

Remove any old nail polish, and give your nails a thorough cleaning, then dry.

Once youve checked on that, you can proceed to the fun part: Actually doing your nails!

Start with applying the acrylic nails.

Trim your nails, and then buff them so that the nail can stick better.

You can use the same buffer youll use later for your gel. Using a wooden cuticle pusher, push back your cuticles.

Never cut!

Lastly, youll want to apply a good primer to your nails.

Your preferred brand is fine and should work just as well as a standard acrylic manicure.

Shaping your acrylic nails is more of an art than a science, so thats something youll have to play by ear.

Once you have the right shape, youll apply a dot of the nail glue to the back of the acrylic, spreading it side-to-side.

Apply it to your natural nail, being sure to get the placement right.

Its best not to have to redo this because it only takes about five seconds to dry.

Dont make a frustrating mistake make sure you have the placement right the first time.

Make sure no glue gets on your skin it can cause irritation.

Fix Mistakes Before Curing

Theres a whole scientific explanation for how UV/LED light-activated gel nail polish works, but basically the resin in the nail polish reacts to the wavelengths emitted by the lamp and it hardens, adhering to the nail. Because of this, be sure to fix all mistakes or polish mishaps before curing the nail under the light. After it cures, it will be much harder to fix.

Is Gel Nail Polish Fake Nails

Definitely not this is a big misunderstanding circulating people for a while. Gel nail polish is not the same as fake nails or acrylic nails. Acrylic nails stick on top of your natural nail bed using adhesive.

Also, fake nails can damage your natural nails over time, and they can be painful if worn for too long and regularly. However, gel manicure looks and feels very much like fake nails on our natural nail, but they are not close to similar.

Gel Polish Does Weaken Nail Beds

Gel polish makes your nail beds weaker, although it won’t harm your actual nails.

Your nails themselves aren’t sensitive to air or lack thereof, but your nail beds and cuticles are. Although the gel polish shouldn’t be on these parts of your nails anyway, the removal process can expose your nail beds to damage. You should typically avoid taking off gel polish at home – a professional will know how to do it without causing damage.

  • Apply a thin layer of Bluesky Base Coat to all five nails, capping the ends. Avoid the skin and cuticle.
  • Cure for 60 seconds under the Bluesky lamp, it will still be tacky but this is normal, as this is what allows the next coat to bond to the gel base.
  • Apply your chosen colour coat in the same way as the base coat a thin coat, cap the end, avoid your skin.
  • Cure the Gel Polish for 60 seconds.
  • Repeat steps 3 and 4 building up the colour each time. 1 coat will give a sheer finish, 2 is normal, 3 will be a solid colour.

  • Cure the Gel Top Coat for 60 seconds.

Should I Use A Uv Lamp Or A Led Lamp

A UV or LED lamp is essential. There are lots of different ones on the market.

UV lamps are generally cheaper but they also take longer to cure.

UV lamps use ultraviolet light similar to a sunbed. The typical curing time for a UV lamp is around 2 minutes.

A UV lamp should, in theory, be able to cure any type of gel nail polish.

LED lamps are more energy efficient and eco-friendly.

An LED lamp can cure in as little as 15 seconds, and most will have options to cure for 30 or 60 seconds as well.

There are some polishes on the market that cannot be cured by an LED lamp so you need to make sure that the brand you are using is LED compatible.

I can tell you that bluesky nail polish works really well with LED lamps, but Im not sure about other brands.

I would advise that you buy the same brand lamp as the polish that you are using if possible. A lot of scientific research goes into matching the polish formula with the wavelength of light used to cure.

    Gently Push Off Polish

Youll know youve soaked long enough when you see the edges of the polish curling up. When the gel is obviously breaking down or sliding off, gently use a rubber-ended cuticle pusher to clean the polish off your nail plate, advises Dr. Stern. This is a critical point in how to remove gel nail polish. Aggressive pushing and rubbing here will damage the nail bed. If you have to use more than gentle pressure, youll need to repeat the soaking step.

How To Remove Gel Nail Polish At Home

A gel manicure uses a gel-based polish that requires a UV or LED light to cure the polish and lock it into your nails. That’s why they last longer without chipping or fading. However, leave gel polish on too long, and the nails underneath can get brittle. It’s best to take it out with acetone, says an OPI brand trainer, who shares her go-to six step process.

  • Buff the shine of your polish using a nail file.

  • Soak a small piece of cotton with acetone and place it on your nail.

  • Wrap each nail with foil, and cover all the cotton swabs. Then let it sit for 15 minutes.

  • Twist and take out the foil and cotton together.

  • Wipe your nails with polish remover. You can also use a plastic pusher/orange stick to get rid of any nail polish stuck on the nail. Do not scratch it or peel it with any sharp object, as that can damage it.

  • Then, apply a nail strengthener to ensure that you don’t have any breakage, and file the edges so they don’t get caught on anything.

  • However, if you don’t have nail polish remover at home, Punjani says you can use a regular nail file too.

  • Cut and file your nails so that they are short and manageable.

  • Using a coarse grit nail file, file down your nails down slowly. Keep blowing the dust away to check how far you are from your natural nail to avoid damaging it.

  • Once you almost reach your natural nail, switch over to a softer nail file that won’t damage your nails as much.

  • Once you file off all of the gel polish, wash your hands/nails with a gentle soap.

  • Care For The Cuticles

Just because you arent soaking your fingernails, doesnt mean you should be neglecting the cuticles. Pushing back the cuticle will make for a larger nail bed . If you have a layer of skin at the end of the nail, the gel polish wont adhere to the nail and will stick to the skin instead. Neglecting the cuticles will cause premature lifting and the gel manicure wont last as long as it should.

Think Of Gel Polish As Liquid Acrylics

Ever wonder specifically just how gel manicures remain so excellent for so long? The chemical make-ups for gel polish and routine nail polish vary with each brand, however, the significant distinction is that gel polish will only dry out under straight UV or LED light contact, while routine nail polish can broadcast completely dry, discusses star nail musician Yoko Sakakura. Gel gloss applications treat under a lamp, producing a hard layer of polish that makes it more resilient and also longer lasting. The removal procedure for gel gloss is more complicated as well, needing the nail to be soaked in acetone to appropriately liquify the formula off of the nail. Not only will they last much longer, but theyll look more difficult and also shinier while youve obtained em, too.

Try To Limit Your Exposure To The Uv Lamp

A recent study from the American Academy of Dermatology revealed that gel manicures may not be a safe option for people who are highly sensitive to UV light. The UV dose that you receive during a gel manicure is brief, but its intense, Dr. Adigun said in the study. Over time, this intense exposure can add up to cause skin damage.

“An additional concern is the rise in popularity of LED nail lamps,” Dr. Adigun notes of her own research on the safety of gel manicures. LED lamps have become popular as much for their faster curing times as the belief that they’re safer than UV lamps, but Dr. Adigun insists this is not the case. “Although many people mistakenly believe these lamps do not use UVA to cure, they in fact use higher intensities of UVA wavelengths in order to achieve the shorter curing times. This higher intensity of UVA irradiance means that it requires less time for these lamps to potentially harm the skin,” she explains.

Instead, Dr. Adigun recommends bringing along your own pair of YouVeeShield gloves to protect your hands against UVA radiation . “It is the most protective material protects the entire digits and wrist,” Dr. Adigun says.

Let Your Natural Nail Breathe In Between Gel Manicures

Whether or not you opt for a gel or traditional polish formula, the truth is that regular manis of any kind can weaken your natural nails. “The manicure process can lead to dehydration and thinning of the nail plate,” says Dr. Adigun. “I’ve seen my clients come in with peeling, thin, breaking, discolored nails and even painful nail beds,” explains Jenna.

But that fact isn’t to deter salon regulars, nor those who live for an at-home manicure. Unfortunately, according to Dr. Adigun, by not looking at your natural nail at least every two weeks you won’t be able to properly assess its condition, plus you might even be missing infections and in certain, severe cases, tumors. The thick, armor-like coating of polish also blocks nails from being able to transfer oxygen, explains Jenna.

Dr. Adigun encourages patients to avoid back-to-back gel appointments to prevent lasting damage. “I always tell my patients to go on a gel ‘honeymoon,'” says Dr. Adigun. “This break will allow their nails to rehydrate and repair.”

How to Apply Gel Nail Polish Perfectly | Step By Step Guide for Beginners |
    • The first thing that you need to do is prep your nails like you would usually do,
    • I usually prep by pushing back my cuticles, filing my nails, and then cleaning them with a cotton pad soaked with rubbing alcohol.
    • Next, apply your regular nail polish as you usually do, I usually apply them in two thin coats.
    • But before you apply your gel top coat you need to allow your polish to dry completely. I recommend leaving your polish to dry for 4-6 hours before applying the gel top coat.
    • If your nail polish isnt dried properly before you apply the gel top coat, your nail polish will shrink and wrinkle up.
    • Now once your nail polish has dried you can apply a thin coat of gel top coat over your nail polish, just ensure you cap the edges
    • Finally, let it cure under your UV or Led Lamps as recommended by your brand of gel top coat, once cured dont forget to wipe away that tacky or sticky layer with rubbing alcohol.

How Do I Remove Gel Nail Polish

Removing gel nail polish is a lot more difficult than putting it on. Heres what youll need.

Gel nail polish remover or acetone. Some cotton wool or lint-free pads.Tin foil or plastic nail clips.A nail scraper or wooden orange stick.Lots of patience!

You can use pure acetone to remove your gel nail polish. It works out a lot cheaper than buying special products advertised as gel nail remover.

Start by soaking the cotton wool pad in acetone. Apply it to your nail. You can hold it on by wrapping your nail in tin foil, or you can buy special plastic clips that are designed for this purpose very cheaply.

Let your nails soak for at least 15 minutes. have a look at them. You should see that the polish is starting to lift off on its own. You can help it along by scraping it off gently with an orange stick or a metal nail scraper. I like to use an orange stick because the metal scrapers cause more damage to your nail surface.

If the polish doesnt come off all at once then soak them again using a fresh cotton pad. Give it another 15 minutes and then try again.
