Reformation Touring Compilation Releases

As early as December 2008, Keenan had mentioned that he and Howerdel had passively and separately been writing new material for A Perfect Circle, although the band would officially remain in hiatus and largely out of the view of the public through mid-2010. The turning point was an unexpected collaboration between Keenan and Howerdel Keenan was scheduled to perform a rendition of “” with guitarist in June at , but May had to cancel at the last minute. In need of a guitarist, and knowing Howerdel was in the area, Keenan reached out, and had Howerdel play guitar for the performance at the last minute. Despite little time to prepare, the performance was a success, and afterwards, both felt more compelled to perform together again.

Trent Reznor Loses A Song

As Alex Howlett of Financial Times writes, Nine Inch Nails’ “Hurt” finally made it to the fourth installment of the American Recordings series in 2002. Rick Rubin had sent Cash the song before, but the singer couldn’t identify with its industrial style. This time, Rubin sent him the lyrics as well, and after Cash gave it a second shot, he told the producer: “If you feel strongly about this, we can try it.”

Nine Inch Nails frontman Trent Reznor was slightly more doubtful, as Radio X notes. “Hurt” was an intensely personal thing he had written during a period of severe depression, and he initially perceived the idea of a Johnny Cash version as “gimmicky.” However, when Rubin came calling, Reznor gave his permission to cover the track, which Cash chose to interpret truthfully to his situation at the time: Instead of Reznor’s young man’s anguish, Cash sang “Hurt” as a man whose health was failing and who was nearing his death.

Initially, Reznor was conflicted about the end result, describing it as “weird” and “like I was watching my girlfriend f**k somebody else.” However, when he saw the music video, which paired Cash’s powerful, yet fragile version to imagery of the elderly singer in the eerie environment of the House of Cash museum, Reznor realized the impact of the country legend’s take on “Hurt,” a cover song that has become more famous than the original. “I just lost my girlfriend,” the Nine Inch Nail star said, “Because that song isn’t mine anymore.”

Rick Rubin Works His Magic

According to Johnny Black of Louder, Rick Rubin became interested in Johnny Cash because he wanted to work with “a legendary artist who might not be in the best place in his career at the moment.” Manager Lou Robin set up a meeting between the two in 1993, and though Cash initially dismissed Rubin as a run-in-the-mill record company guy, the producer won him over with a simple idea. According to Cash, Rubin’s proposition was: “Well, I don’t know that we will sell records. I would like you to sit in my living room with a guitar and two microphones and just sing to your heart’s content, everything you ever wanted to record.” Understandably, this worked just fine with Cash.

Rubin kept his promise of creative freedom and lo-fi simplicity. His wide-ranging musical tastes allowed for a method of production that was light on studio grind and heavy on friendly interaction between him and Cash, with the producer introducing the artist to new, exciting music. When they worked on the first American Recordings, they used this method to record around 70 songs over a period of nine months, and it’s probably safe to say that this novel approach paid off. In a 2004 interview with WBUR, Rubin said that from that point on, they were basically always working, recording sporadically whenever the ailing artist felt he was up to it.

American Recordings Made The Man In Black The Epitome Of Cool

To understand the trajectory that would allow Johnny Cash and a Nine Inch Nails song to be mentioned in the same sentence, we must first look at the album that revitalized him in the public eye. Cash was already quite the cool kid of country, but as an interview with Rolling Stone’s Jancee Dunn shows us, the rest of the world caught on in 1994. This was the year Cash released American Recordings, a sparsely-produced album of stripped-down original material and covers from people like Glenn Danzig, Tom Waits and Leonard Cohen. In late 1993, he had already played at the legendary Viper Room, according to Setlist, and there were even rumors of a Lollapalooza appearance something that was not often associated with an old-school country musician.

Cash was now in with the hip crowd, and a lot of this was thanks to American Recordings producer Rick Rubin. As Kory Grow of Rolling Stone tells us, Rick Rubin is the co-founder of Def Jam records, and has produced acts like Eminem, Jay-Z, LL Cool J and Run-DMC. As such, he might not seem like the most obvious guy to produce Johnny Cash … at least, until you read on, and note that his resume also includes acts ranging from Metallica and Slayer, to Tom Petty and The Dixie Chicks.

Criticism Of The Music Industry

In May 2007, Reznor made a post on the official Nine Inch Nails website condemning âthe parent company of the band’s record label, âfor their pricing and distribution plans for Nine Inch Nails’ 2007 album Year Zero. He labeled the company’s retail pricing of Year Zero in Australia as “ABSURD,” concluding that “as a reward for being a ‘true fan’ you get ripped off”. Reznor went on to say that as “the climate grows more and more desperate for record labels, their answer to their mostly self-inflicted wounds seems to be to screw the consumer over even more.” Reznor’s post, specifically his criticism of the recording industry at large, elicited considerable media attention. In September 2007, Reznor continued his attack on Universal Music Group at a concert in Australia, urging fans there to “steal” his music online instead of purchasing it legally. Reznor went on to encourage the crowd to “steal and steal and steal some more and give it to all your friends and keep on stealin’.”

In 2013, Reznor returned to Columbia Records for , the eighth Nine Inch Nails studio album. On the Columbia release of Hesitation Marks, Reznor has stated: “Iâm trying to make the best thing I can make… and I also want as many people as possible to be aware that itâs out there.”

Nine Inch Nails’ First Music Video Caught The Attention Of The Fbi

While few people noticed the similarities between “Down In It” and “Dig It,” its video raised many more eyebrows namely those of the FBI, according to Mental Floss. The video, filmed on a shoestring budget, features Trent Reznor and members of his touring band in an empty parking garage, throwing bottles, and dropping a TV off of the garage roof.

For the video’s final shot, Reznor’s character was supposed to look like he fell off the roof as well, so he laid on the ground with fake blood around him and cornstarch smeared on his face. The idea was to attach the camera to a weather balloon, let it float upward, and then run the footage backward to make it look like the camera was moving toward Reznor instead. This went fine until the balloon got away, taking the camera with it. It landed in a field over 100 miles away in Michigan where a farmer discovered it and turned the footage inside over to authorities.

What the FBI saw was a corpse, two men standing over it, and a third man running away at full speed . They thought they had found a recording of an actual murder. After opening up an FBI investigation, they finally tracked down the source of the video and, satisfied Reznor was alive, closed the case.

Something I Can Never Have

I still recall the taste of your tears / Echoing your voice just like the ringing in my ears / My favourite dreams of you still wash ashore / Scraping through my head till I dont want to sleep anymore The most spine-tinglingly personal cut on Nine Inch Nails debut record was a simple piano ballad that paved the way for future classics like Hurt and Right Where It Belongs, but its looping instrumentation and sparse deployment of wheezing synths/pulsating beats lends it an additional alien quality as attributable to Trents love of dark, challenging sci-fi as anything his contemporaries had tried before. This thing is slowly take me apart, he sings. Grey would be the colour if I had a heart. Quite.

Musical Style Influences And Legacy

The band’s music has been described as a number of different genres, though despite the sound changes and lineup changes, the writing process has remained the same for the band Howerdel primarily writes the band’s instrumental music, while Keenan contributes the lyrics and vocal melodies. Keenan, already very well known for his work with fronting the band through the 1990s, always strove to keep the sound of two bands different:

The music was very different, so I responded differently. The process that we go through in recording with Tool is very organic, but at the same time it is very thought out. There is a very left-brain process of dissecting what we’re doing and drawing from source material it’s very research oriented and . With A Perfect Circle the process is far more mechanical and computer oriented, but at the same time it is also far more emotional and intuitive. Tool is more a result, and is more a result.

Reznor Had A Lot Of Trouble Keeping Band Members In Nine Inch Nails

When news that Nine Inch Nails was being inducted to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame was announced for 2020, one big question hung over the celebration who, out of the band’s dozens of members, would actually be admitted? While Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross are the only permanent members, the band has included numerous touring and studio musicians.

Part of the reason for this, at least according to one of the band’s earliest touring members, Richard Patrick, is because, well, Reznor’s kind of a jerk. While it’s been rumored for years that Reznor was hard to work with, Patrick, after being denied a spot in the band’s roster for the Hall of Fame, said in an interview he ended up leaving Nine Inch Nails specifically because of the frontman, according to Consequence of Sound.

Between Reznor’s attitude and his own musical ambitions, Patrick was already fed up. It came to a head when, on a recording break, Reznor advised Patrick to deliver pizzas for extra cash. Patrick quit the band shortly after in 1993 to form his own band, Filter, which became popular in its own right. Considering many other members of the band have only stuck around for a few years or so, it seems like that rumor might have some truth.

Trent Reznor: Youre Seeing The Fall Of America In Real Time

Hes survived infamy, addiction and a foray into tech. Now the Nine Inch Nails frontman has swapped his self-loathing for shame at the state of the nation

The title of Nine Inch Nails new tour, kicking off in Las Vegass Hard Rock Hotel & Casino, is Cold and Black and Infinite. To get here you must pass the tumbling dice, the restless women queuing for the Magic Mike live show, and the inert displays of Johnny Cash memorabilia. It is slightly incongruous, appearing as it does down the street from Backstreet Boys: Larger Than Life and Mariah Carey: The Butterfly Returns, but no less razzle-dazzle in its own way.

Since forming in 1988 as the brainchild of Trent Reznor, Nine Inch Nails have taken various anti-commercial elements industrial noise, songs about pain, absence and sex and hammered them into Vegas-ready shapes, showtunes for the goth-glam set. Thirty years on, Reznor the only official member until 2016, when his long-term British collaborator Atticus Ross was added is in one of his most fertile periods, having just completed a trilogy of releases with new album Bad Witch, six arresting tracks of wailing sax, acid house bass lines, and post-punk drumming, topped with Reznors trademark misanthropic lyrics .

I couldnt fit in anywhere, I couldnt relate to people I felt alone, I felt angry about it. Part of me is still that

Nine Inch Nails’ Most Famous Album Has A Horrifying Backstory

By far Nine Inch Nails’ most popular album, The Downward Spiral spawned numerous singles including “Closer,” which received significant radio and MTV play despite literally having the F-word repeated multiple times throughout its chorus. The album is their highest-selling, at almost 4 million copies, per Spin, and brought them worldwide attention. Not only that, but it’s one of the most critically acclaimed albums of the 90s and of the band’s whole career.

But what many listeners who only heard the singles didn’t know is that The Downward Spiral is a concept album, like Pink Floyd‘s The Wall or The Who‘s Tommy. The concept behind this album is particularly disturbing, however. The songs and lyrics are all meant to tell the story of a man’s slow descent into depression and self-destruction, i.e., his downward spiral, according to Kerrang. He grows angrier at himself, religion, and even his personal relationships as he falls deeper into self-loathing.

There’s no happy ending, either, as the final songs on the album, the title track, and “Hurt,” strongly imply the main character finally succumbs to his depression and suicidal urges, ending his own life. “Hurt” itself is also famous for a separate death connection country legend Johnny Cash covered it and released it just a few months before his own death in 2003.
