Sustainable Nail Polish Brands

How To Make Nail Polish | What’s Vegan Nail Polish?

Unfortunately, theres no such thing as zero-waste nail polish. Thats because nail lacquer is a polymer and is essentially plastic. But if youre looking for a vegan and eco-friendly nail polish brand that mindfully produces its nail polish collection while minimizing its environmental impact, here are my top recommendations: Sienna, Kester Black, Ere Perez, Dazzle Dry, and OZN.

The Product Has Not Been Tested On Animals

Even though some cosmetic products are advertised as vegan, it doesnt necessarily mean they haven’t tested on animals. While The Vegan Society’s Vegan Trademark ensures a product being both free from animal products and not tested on animals, its not always the case with some other trademarks. If a particular product does not carry The Vegan Societys Vegan Trademark, it or some of its ingredients may have been tested on animals.

Clean Vegan Beauty Demand

Demand for clean beauty is on the rise. According to data released earlier this year, the global market for clean beauty products is expected to grow at a CAGR of more than 12 percent over the next six years, from $5.4 billion in 2020 to more than $11 billion anticipated by 2027. The market for vegan products is even larger a recent report anticipated the category will exceed $20 billion by 2026, up from $12.9 billion in 2017.

Much like the rise in sustainable plant-based alternatives to meat, eggs, and dairy, consumers are seeking out beauty products not just void of harmful chemicals, but those free from unethical animal ingredients, too.

We could say the beauty landscape is changing, but lets be real, it already has, OPI explains on its blog. Natural and clean products are no longer a nice-to-have in the industry, they are an expectation, and clients are becoming savvier and savvier in nail health. What does that mean? Theyre conscious of what ingredients go into their products, so its no surprise that this has become a global obsession thats growing rapidly.

Vegan Nail Polish: The Best Cruelty Free Brands

A number of companies produce nail polish thats both vegan and cruelty free.

Nail polish is among the least natural of all cosmetics. In fact, its more akin to fast-drying paint than to any conventional sort of makeup. Manufacturers begin by mixing pigment into an opaque and glossy blending agent. Next, they dissolve this mixture into a solvent selected for its ability to evaporate quickly when exposed to air. Theres nothing intrinsic to nail polish, except for perhaps coloring agents, thats likely to involve animal ingredients. And you wont even need to read ingredient lists, since practically all cruelty-free vegan nail polishes are labeled accordingly.

Since nail polish comes into contact with the body, many brands still use animal tests to establish safety. Back in the day, nail polishes underwent no safety testing. Even worse, they commonly contained treated metals and other potentially hazardous substances. And all common nail polish ingredients were at one time tested on animals.

Fortunately, many popular brands use neither animal testing nor non-vegan substances.

What Toxins Are In Traditional Nail Polish

Its quite frightening to uncover all of the toxic chemicals that go into traditional nail polishes. In addition to formaldehyde, dibutyl phthalate, and toluene, Miller tells us that most nail polishes, tend to have ingredients from a variety of animals, such as beetles and fish scales. For example, carmine is taken from shells of the female Cochineal insect, while guanine is taken from fish scales. Oleic acid, derived from animal fat, is another common ingredient used as a thickening agent for chip-resistant manicures. Miller adds that perfumes embedded into polishes also arent required to be disclosed in a majority of countries, including the United States. This means that non-vegan ingredients could be included without consumers knowing.

The Basics: What You Should Know

5-free nail polish means that the nail polish doesnt contain the top 5 most toxic chemicals most often found in nail polish formulas. Typical 5-free polishes are do not contain dibutyl phthalate , formaldehyde and formaldehyde resins, toluene, or camphor. Avoiding these five hazardous chemicals should be your baseline requirement.

Meanwhile, 7-free nail polish goes a little bit further than 5-free. It means that the nail polish doesnt contain two additional not great chemicals usually ethyl tosylamide and triphenyl phosphate . Therefore, 7-free nail polish is just a little bit cleaner than 5-free polish.

Next, 8-free nail polish means that the nail polish does not contain dibutyl phthalate , toluene, formaldehyde, formaldehyde resin, camphor, ethyl tosylamide, triphenyl phosphate or xylene. All of these chemicals are carcinogens and endocrine disruptors, which are toxic to our bodies.

Finally, 10-free nail polish is the best of the best. This means that the nail polish is free from all the same things as 8-free polish, as well as parabens and tert-butyl hydroperoxide. The 10-free designation is the highest standard in the non-toxic nail polish industry, and its the one that I personally strive to use most frequently.

While 10-free polish is harder to find, its worth being scrupulous about.

Why Vegan Nail Polish

Vegan nail polish isnt just for vegans. Its the very best you can buy. More and more we hear the terms cruelty-free and vegan being used in conjunction with the beauty and cosmetic industry. A large variety of animals are used around the world every day in the testing of millions of products and a quick search of the internet will provide some very confronting pictures and videos of animals who have been subjected to such research and testing. Its cruel and completely unnecessary.

Many longstanding nail polish brands have used and still do use ingredients like fish scales, oyster shells, bug resin and colours derived from beetles.

Thankfully, in July of 2017 in Australia, a prohibition on any new products that have been tested on animals or which require ingredients which have been tested on animals will become active.

We believe that no animal should ever suffer in the process of manufacturing ingredients, during the production of, or in the testing of cosmetics and/or beauty products. Its why we never use any animal by-products or testing and we manufacture in Australia where laws require quality practices.

What Makes A Nail Polish Non

“Products are crossing off ‘toxic’ ingredients from formulas at rapid speed, and some brands offer vegan and gluten-free options,” says Wizemann. Most non-toxic nail polishes are three-free, meaning they do not contain formaldehyde, toluene, and dibutyl phthalate. Beyond that, polishes go as far as being nine-, or 10-, or even 14-free. Here’s the breakdown of what’s missing from those formulas:

  • 5-free contains no formaldehyde, toluene, DBP, formaldehyde resin, camphor
  • 7-free contains noformaldehyde, toluene, DBP, formaldehyde resin, camphor, ethyl tosylamide, xylene
  • 9-free contains no formaldehyde, toluene, DBP, formaldehyde resin, camphor, ethyl tosylamide, xylene, parabens, acetone
  • 10-free containsnoformaldehyde, toluene, DBP, formaldehyde resin, camphor, ethyl tosylamide, xylene, parabens, acetone, TPHP, TBHP, gluten

No matter which formula you choose, follow instructions, avoiding use in poorly-ventilated areas. Still wary? “Water-based formulas incorporate non-synthetic pigments and aqueous acrylic polymers, plus they are also odorless,” says Wizemann. Though easy to apply, they are often not as long-lasting. Here, the “cleanest” nail lacquers available right now:

The bottle says it all: “natural as mud.” This kid-friendly polish is hypoallergenic, water-based, and cruelty-free. Sensitive to the smell of nail lacquers? This formula claims to be “virtually odorless,” so you can breathe easy when it comes time to touch up your tips.

When I find myself posting on Twitter or talking in everyday conversations about vegan nail polish, I almost always get asked, arent all nail polishes vegan?. The answer is no. A lot of companies test on animals and a lot contain animal ingredients. In this post Ill help explain What Makes Nail Polish Vegan.

Update Logical Harmony now provides you with a Vegan Nail Polish Brand List so that you can be sure you are buying animal friendly nail polish. This list will be updated as I find out about more vegan nail polish brands.

Once youve found a cruelty free brand that you like, next comes the color selection. Its typically shimmery and metallic shades that arent vegan. Its typical for these shimmery shades to contain fish scales to achieve that effect. Unfortunately, these shades wont be labeled in an obvious manner. What you do want to look for is pearl or guanine.

Avoid Carmine When Selecting Vegan

Carmine is a red colourant found in many nail polishes, lipsticks, and blushers. It looks pretty, but carmine has the ugliest of sources.

Carmine is made from the crushed carcasses of the female cochineal insect. Not only does carmine production involve the death of insects, it’s also apparently sexist!

Anywhere from 80,000 to 100,000 cochineals are used to create just 1 kilogramme of carmine dye. Watch out for carmine dye in red shades of nail polish.

Are All Nail Polishes Vegan

Investigate the ingredients in your cosmetics and you’ll be surprised what animal products you find. Meet the two nail polish ingredients all vegans should avoid and the one vegan-certified brand we swear by.

Nail polishes finish an outfit, add subtle glamour to an everyday uniform, and give you a pop of colour fun exactly when you need it. The last thing you’d expect to find in your nail varnish is animal-derived ingredients. But that’s exactly what some nail colours contain.

There are two ingredients you should avoid when vetting vegan-friendly nail polish:

  • Guanine
  • These names sound more like chemicals than animal ingredients. Confused? Let us explain exactly what these ingredients are and why you’ll find them in nail polish.
