Do It Yourself Gel Nails

What Equipment Do You Need

DIY Gel Nail Polish Tutorial

To try out gel manicures at home, you will need several things to get started. You will need a set of gel polishes, including a base and top coat, as well as your own UV light. Buying your own UV light can be a little bit pricey, so you may not want to invest in this whole setup unless you already know that you enjoy gel manicures.

*ready To Get Your Own Fimo Check Out These Options:

I realize there are some people who arent into going all out with design, fimo etc. Some just want a pretty, natural nail. I love that style as well. So I set out to see just how natural nail forms could look. I was very happy with the results.

First attempt: Semi-transparent natural nail tip with clear acrylic in a nail form. I polished just the tips with Sally Hansen Disco Ball.

For my second attempt I used a traditional nail tip and overlayed with natural acrylic on the tips and soft pink on the nail beds. Again, applied with nail forms. This gave me a different natural look with more pink and it was a little bit stronger than the first try. However, both looked great and even more natural than what I usually received at the nail salon.

First, use SPF on your hands if you purchase a UV lamp.Years ago when I bought a lamp, LED lamps were just coming out and I decided to play it safe with the traditional UV lamp. My light has long been discontinued!

I recommend buying an LED lamp for 2 reasons: 1. LED is safer on your skin 2. LED lamps will dry the polish in nearly 1/4 the time! This will save you a significant amount of time. Trust me! Also, snag THIS KIT for the polishes + acetone + alcohol. Youll need it all!

  • PREPARE NAIL. Start out with a clean set of nails. Gently push cuticles back. Use 180 grit file to roughen surface of nail.
  • CLEAN NAIL. Use a lint-free cloth soaked with 90% alcohol to clean the nail and cuticle from oil and debris.
  • FOUNDATION COAT. Apply a thin coat of foundation gel, being careful to not make this coat too thick. Applying too thick of a foundation coat can lead to the polish peeling and lifting. Clean any excess that gets on the skin or cuticle by brushing it off with a brush dipped in 90% alcohol. It is important to make sure that none of the product bakes to your skin since your skin will slough off those cells that are bonded to the product, and this will cause the polish to lift off the nail and chip.
  • UV LAMP. Cure for 2 minutes. Follow the directions on your lamp. UV lamps take longer to full cure the polish compared to LED lamps. Here, Im using a UV light. I really need to upgrade!

Zoya’s Gel Kit Prioritizes Nail And Cuticle Health Which Sets It Apart From Other Gel Manicure Kits

Pros: Can create a naked or color manicure, easy to remove

Cons: Only available on the retailer’s website, colors sold separately

The Zoya Gelie-Cure Foundation Pro Kit makes nail health a priority. The kit comes with a slew of products to help strengthen and nourish nails, including a hydrating rescue serum and a repair base to smooth any ridges or separations.

The kit also includes the brand’s Gelie-Cure Naked Gelie coat, the first demi-gel multipurpose gel formula of its kind to hit the market. You apply it directly over Zoya’s Repair Base before curing, and it adheres to the base coat, as well as the rescue serum, in order to ensure “high shine, flexible, fileable and damage free results,” per the product’s description. Naked Gelie is the last step in achieving a “naked manicure,” aka a manicure void of color, enhancing your natural nails, and also only takes two minutes to remove, without acetone, scraping, or pushing at the nail.

What sets Zoya’s DIY gel manicure kit from its competitors, is its versatility. You can create a gorgeous naked mani, or opt for traditional, colorful tips. Unfortunately, the kit doesn’t come with color polish, but you can apply your favorite hue over the foundation, top it with Naked Manicure Glossy Seal Topcoat, and follow up with a drop of the Zoya Fast Drops to accelerate your drying time.

Create a strong foundation for your polish with a gel base coat. This set includes a top coat as well, so after completing Step 4, use the gel top coat to complete your manicure.

What Reviewers Are Saying: This is my first time doing gel nails, which I started creating on my own to save money. I am very pleased with this base coat and top coat. The instructions are simple and Ive had my polish on for a week now, with no chipping or other issues. The top coat is so shiny, and every day it looks like I have brand new nails. This product saves me an extra step because I dont have to wipe the sticky part off the top coat. Its an amazing product for the price.

    Are Gel Manicures Worth It

If you get normal manis on the reg or have a big spring break trip coming up that you want chip-free color for, gel is def worth the splurge. They only cost around $10 to $15 more than a regular one. But if it’s just for one night or you’re on a budget, you might want to opt for press-on nails or a regular manicure.

How To Remove Gel Nails At Home

So what about taking the DIY gel nails off? Doesnt it ruin your nails? Not at all! I will say that manis done at the salon are harder to get off than mine but taking the polish off is very easy. Heres my little system.

    1. Cut five slips of tin foil.
    2. Soak a cotton round in some strong nail polish remover and then wrap it on the nail.
    3. Wrap the foil around the cotton pad and squeeze to secure.

They do make re-usable nail covers for this, but I think this is just as easy.

    4. Wait 5-10 minutes.

The longer you wait the easier it will be. And I do just one hand at a time so I can re-use the foil and have a free hand to do things with in the meantime.

    5. At this point remove the foils by sliding them off and use a cuticle pusher to gently scrape the gel off.

It should have curled up and sometimes the whole gel piece slides off with the foil! If its not coming off easily, give the nail a little more soaking.

    6. Repeat on hand two and your nails are naked again!

I usually wait a day or two to let my nails breathe before repainting the DIY gel nails again.

So there you have it! Sparkle, sparkle.

    What Is Shellac / Gel

Gel is a type of nail polish that is extremely long lasting and will go with out chipping for as long as 2 weeks. Different brands chip sooner than others so the timeframe really depends. You will need a UV lamp or LED lamp if you want to do DIY gel nails at home. The only downside is that gel is more difficult to remove then normal nail polish, but its totally worth it because you would have to take off normal polish twice in the time frame one gel manicure lasts!! Plus, I will show you how you can remove gel nail polish easily.

Many of you are wondering what is shellac? Is it different than Gel? Shellac is the brand name that the company CND chose for their gel product. So shellac and gel are essentially the same thing. Still have questions on Gel? Check out this guide to learn more.

How To Apply Gel Nails At Home

Jenni Draper talks us through how to do the ultimate at-home gel manicure in 10 simple steps :

    1. Ensure cuticles are pushed back using a tool like Tweezerman Dual Sided Pushy Cuticle Stick, £16, but avoid using cuticle clippers. If the cuticles are cut incorrectly it can lead to infections and cause the skin to grow back thicker, so leave that to the experts.

    2. File your nails to your preferred length and shape . Dont seesaw with your file, just go gently in one direction and back again the other way.

    3. Using a soft nail buffer, go from the cuticle to the free edge , removing shine and leaving the nails with a smooth, ridge-free base. Theres no need to over-buff, just go gently, before brushing any excess dust off.

    4. Using a lint-free wipe and a nail cleanser for gels, scrub over the nails to remove oils and dust, leaving them squeaky clean.

    5. Apply a thin layer of specialised gel base coat, being careful to only apply to the nail, avoiding the skin. If any touches the skin, use a cuticle or cocktail stick to remove it straight away, before curing in the LED light box recommended for your gel system, for the recommended amount of time.

    8. Apply your second coat of colour, perfecting your coverage. Repeat steps 6 and 7.

    10. Finally, wipe over the nails with a cleanser from your kit and finish off with a nourishing nail oil and hand cream. I love DadiOil, £7.50, and Chanel La Creme Main, £45.

Diy Gel Nails: Step By Step Tutorial

    04/02/2020·BEAUTY, LIFESTYLE

It took a lot longer to DIY gel nails than a salon appointment usually takes. However, Im totally thrilled with the results and the kit feels like a worthy investment. All The Products And Equipment You Need For An At

Below is the full list of products you need for your in-home gel experience. And please note that these are salon-quality products. These are not dumbed-down amateur products that are going to lead to nails that chip off in two days. These are the exact products and tools used by salons so the result is a manicure thats just as amazing.

    1. Nail Clippers 11. Cuticle Oil12. LED lamp 13. Disposable Changing Pad to protect your surface 14. Gel Polish Remover Clips

Many of the above products you likely already own, but even if you were to buy everything brand new , were talking less than $150 in startup costs to give yourself a near-infinite number of gel manicures and pedicures. Not bad when you consider this is basically the cost of ONE trip to a salon for both a gel manicure and pedicure .

    Glass Or Crystal Files

Gel Nails Fill In At Home DIY

There are numerous types of nail files like emery board, glass, or crystal files. We recommend glass or crystal as they last longer. They have the file pattern etched into the glass or crystal, hence the longevity.

Good to note cheap glass files have patterns that are glued to the surface rather than etched, which can wear off quickly. Glass or crystal are also best for your natural nails, as they smooth the nail tip to seal it rather than shredding the nail tip.

If you have a durable glass or crystal file, it can serve you many years since the pattern is etched on the glass and will not wear. They’re perfect for personal use so minimize sharing. Also, make sure to clean them after a while to keep them safe for use. It’s a tool you can’t miss if you want to start your journey to do home gel nails.

To Finish Your Diy Gel Nails:

To finish these off, we used a high shine no-wipe topcoat. Some topcoats have a tacky or residual layer after theyre cured so make sure if youre using a topcoat that does have a tacky layer to wipe it with alcohol after. You can also float the topcoat a little when applying for some added strength.

Cure for 60 seconds in an LED lamp.

Once your nails come out of the lamp and are free of any tacky layer, apply cuticle oil and KEEP APPLYING throughout the day. Trust me, with all the hand washing going on youre going to want to! It also helps add flexibility to your nail so your mani doesnt get brittle and chip.

Finish rubbing that cuticle oil in and youre finished!! These diy gel nails should last you at least 2-4 weeks and give you something to do while youre Netflix binging, win-win
