How To Do Your Own Nails

Remove Old Nail Paint

HOW TO DO YOUR OWN NAILS AT HOME FOR BEGINNERS! | UNDER $30

Start by removing the old nail paint. Use cotton balls soaked in Acetone Free Nail Paint Remover only for this purpose. You should not use acetone-based remover as that will dissolve the acrylics over entire nail and cause damage to the acrylic base. Since we do not want to take off acrylics but only the nail paint, so make sure you use non-acetone based nail paint remover.

Once you have removed the nail polish, clean your nails with wipe . You may also wash your hands and soak them dry but do not leave the acrylic nails in water for a long time .

You need a clean surface before we go ahead with filling the gaps. Any leftover dust or bacteria and subsequently covered with acrylic may infect your nail bed.

Apply Cuticle Oil To Your Nail Beds

Another important part of nail prep: cuticle oil. Itll soften your cuticles so youll be able to push them back gently. And please dont forget to wash or soak your hands afterward! You need to make sure the oil is completely off your nails before you start the gel processany leftover oil could cause your gel nails to lift . To be extra safe, swipe your nails with a bit of acetone before washing your hands to remove any excess oil.

Using A Pinching Tool

After you have practised doing acrylic for a while or are confident doing basic acrylics, you can use a pinching tool on the nail to make the nail longer, more slender, and to make a stronger C curve, which will make the nail stronger. If youre not using a pinching tool, move onto the next steps.

  • When the acrylic is still drying place the Pinching Tool on the nail like a clamp . If you want it to pinch really narrow then use the bottom end of the pinching tool.
  • Leave on for about 3 minutes.
  • Tap the nail to see if it makes a ting sound and then remove the pinching tool by squeezing the sides apart.

9. Wait a little over 2 minutes for the acrylic to dry .

10. File the entire nail until it is smooth on the top and around the edges and to make the shape more defined. .

11. Now you need to add a top coat to seal in the acrylic. The two steps below show 2 ways of doing this: If you DONT have a lamp to dry your acrylics:

Apply Air Dry Top Coat to your entire nail and leave to dry for about 2 minutes.

If you DO have a lamp:

Apply Urban Graffiti Top Coat / Mega Gloss or Matte Top Coat .

Put your hand under the lamp and turn on.

Leave to cure for 2 minutes under a UV lamp .

When the time is up, remove your hand.

12. Finish off the look by adding a stroke of cuticle oil to the cuticle area of each nail and rub in with your fingers.

Prepare & Apply The Acrylic Mixture To Fill Gap

Now take a glass dish and prepare the acrylic mixture. For this, you will need to mix acrylic powder and acrylic liquid together. You need to form a pearl like bead of acrylic mixture and take it onto the brush to file the gap. Read an easy guide on how to make the perfect bead of acrylic mixture.

Once you have the acrylic mixture bead on the brush, gently apply it on the natural nail evenly to fill the gap between cuticle and acrylic nail edge. Apply only limited quantity to even out the gap and bring it at par with acrylic nail level.

Tip: When you apply acrylic mixture bead on to fill the natural nail gap, keep your finger downwards as that will help the acrylic mixture from rolling down towards cuticle .

This will help you to easily fill the gap without flooding your cuticles. A neat and clean fill in without flooding the cuticles will also reduce lifting up of acrylic due to future nail growth.

Once the gap is filled, apply one or two coats of acrylic mixture on the full nail to create an even and smooth base for the entire nail. For this purpose, apply acrylic mixture in the middle of nail and then use the brush to spread it evenly across the entire nail. Use the sides of brush to apply the acrylic evenly across the corners and blend with existing cuticle.

Theoretically, you can fill the gel nails with acrylic. Once you refill the gaps with acrylic, the entire base can be repainted with gel polish to restore the balance and fresh look.

However, this should only be used as a temporary measure where you are unable to fill the nails yourself with gel. Acrylic and gel should generally be avoided together since both being heavy material may heavily strain your natural nail plate.

As an ideal practice, fill your acrylic nails with acrylic and the gel nails with gel to ensure safe and healthy nail art.

Can You Get Acrylic Nails Filled If They Are Not Grown Out Much

It is ideal to have an infill in around 2 weeks of time when there is a visible outgrown nail gap between your cuticle and acrylic nail. However, if you want an infill before that duration when your nails have not grown much, it should still be fine and cause no issues.

You may particularly want the filling if your acrylic nail has chipped or lifted. There are literally no timing restrictions for re-balancing or repair of acrylic nails.

How Many Times Can You Get Your Nails Filled

You can get your acrylic nails filled in indefinitely and there is no reason why you should replace them with new set unless they are lifted, damaged or you just want a new shape. 8 to 10 infills are common before majority of the folk would want to have full replacement.

If you maintain the acrylics well enough by getting regular infills every 2 to 3 weeks, your existing acrylic set should perform flawlessly for 5 to 6 months. Even beyond that, it should be just fine to continue with same set if there are no balancing issues.

However, it is a good idea to replace the set after 5 to 6 months to make sure everything beneath the false nail is in good shape.

What You Need For Gel Nails At Home

How to Do Your Own Acrylic Nails at Home

Getting gel nails done is unlike a traditional nail polish procedure where equipment is not needed. With gel nails, you will need a kit of tools in order to properly apply gel polish.

What you need for a seamless at-home gel mani is:

    • LED lamp or UV Lamp
    • Glass or crystal files

Without a curing lamp that emits UV light, you wont be able to cure your gel nails.

Its possible to go au naturel by sunbathing your nails and taking advantage of the suns UV rays, but its not the most effective method for curing your DIY gel polish manicure because youd have to wait for the weather to be right.

A UV lamp or LED curing lamp is the right choice here. However, our recommendation is to stick with a LED curing lamp as it omits less UV light and dries the gel polish the quickest.

If you take the time to prep your nails correctly, that is shape, buff and apply the base layer correctly, the manicure will easily last up to three weeks.

As someone who likes to keep my nails short, I found I was filing them down after about two and ready for a colour change well before the mani was ready to be removed. It’s staying power is no different to an in-salon SNS mani.

The initial outlay might seem like a lot, but if you’re someone who goes to the salon monthly and pays $60-$70 for the pleasure, you’ll enjoy major savings three-to-four manicures in.

I realize there are some people who arent into going all out with design, fimo etc. Some just want a pretty, natural nail. I love that style as well. So I set out to see just how natural nail forms could look. I was very happy with the results.

First attempt: Semi-transparent natural nail tip with clear acrylic in a nail form. I polished just the tips with Sally Hansen Disco Ball.

For my second attempt I used a traditional nail tip and overlayed with natural acrylic on the tips and soft pink on the nail beds. Again, applied with nail forms. This gave me a different natural look with more pink and it was a little bit stronger than the first try. However, both looked great and even more natural than what I usually received at the nail salon.

Gel Nail Polish Removers To Consider

Here are some of the most recommended gel nail polish removal methods you can use to successfully remove gel from your nails.

Keep in mind that before trying any of these methods, you should use your nail file to file the top coat lightly or a buffer to buff the top layer of gel polish off before soaking it in acetone.

    1. Soaking Your Nails in Acetone

Due to the high-solvent nature of acetone, it remains as one of the best nail polish removers. However, using acetone frequently removes lots of natural oils and pales your skin, so keep your nails soaked in acetone for 15-20 minutes.

Nonetheless, it’s still a good gel polish remover. You have to settle for one of the two options to use it: file your nails and soak them in acetone, or soak cotton in acetone, and wrap your nails with cotton and foils. Either way, the polish will be out in minutes.

    2. Use a Gel Removal Steamer

A gel removal steamer does just what the cold one cannot do-it steams the whole process giving a warmer environment for faster effective results.

To use it, first make sure you have filed and buffed your gel polish. Then pour the acetone remover into the base, switch on the steamer, then stick your fingers into the 5 finger holes.

Typically, most gel removal steamers will beep you, indicating its done. When youre told its complete, use an orange wood stick or a nail scrapper to scrape off the gel polish.

Repeat the process until the gel nail polish is scraped off of each nail.
