How To Fix Crooked Toe Nails

Crooked Toes And Why They Need To Be Fixed

Its estimated that over 20% of the US population suffers from toe deformities or crooked toes. There are many types of crooked toes including hammertoe, mallet toe, and claw toe. Additionally, toes may be pushed sideways, overlapping with the next toe, or they might rotate from their original position.

Crooked toes may not be bothersome on their own, but will often result in additional symptoms such as corns, calluses, or open sores forming on the top of the toe. As toes become more bent, it will become more and more difficult to find comfortable shoes. Eventually, you may have difficulty moving the toe at all. If your crooked toes are leading to other issues, its time to get them fixed.

How Are Toenails Supposed To Grow

Growth of nails begins from the matrix which looks like a pocket underneath the skin. Usually, a healthy toenail is supposed to grow out straight without any of its parts digging deep into the tissues of your toe.

So if you have a toenail that grows downwards instead of coming out straight, then youre suffering from what is called an ingrown toenail. If it grows out facing upward, then its called a vertical nail.

Had bunion surgery in 2013. The bunion was fixed, but he forgot to straighten my second toe. The doctor thought it would straighten itself. I spent eight weeks on crutches with pain and bleeding. My recommendation, If you need surgery choose a foot orthopedic surgeon not a podiatrist.

Polly on August 07, 2018:

I had bunions early in life from wearing shoes that were too tight. I had surgery on both feet by two different doctors. I had surgery on the right bunion. The Dr. didnt kknow what he was doing and he totally messed up my foot which lead me to the situation /problem Im having today. A few months ago my second toe started hurting A lot. I thought U broke it . But theres wasnt any accident or injury I knew of. I couldnt wear shoes at all, only slippers/ moccasins. My toe started to buckle at the second joint and has remained that way. Looking at my foot now ,its obvious the surgery did nothing but lend a hand in making my foot much worse over time. Its like II never had bunion surgery at all. Except I think his crafty knife work made imy tendons weaker than they woulda been.. SO….

Im going to get a toe straightener and see if I can possibly straighten out my bunion big toe& my buckled hammer toe next to it. The second toe is trying to cross over the third toe. Im afraid my foot will become crippled if I dont get this straightened out .

A toe spacing product, such as Correct Toes, is a powerful tool that can be worn inside men’s and women’s foot-healthy shoes, over toe socks, or on bare feet to help realign the toes in their correct anatomical position, strengthen the muscles and tendons that attach to the toes, and increase the stability of the forefoot. Getting the toes spread back outto the position that nature intendedis fundamental in addressing and preventing all types of crooked toes.

Another major consideration in straightening out the toes involves adopting and using foot-healthy footwear that allows the foot to function like a bare foot inside the shoe. Conventional shoes, including most running shoes, will hasten the progression of a crooked toe, as the design elements included in most conventional models create an imbalance in the foot flexor and extensor muscles and tendons, as well as an imbalance in the four layers of muscles within the foot. Intrinsic foot muscles help stabilize the toes during walking and standing.

Fungal Toenails Yellowed Or Deformed Toenails

Crooked Toe Nails

The most common cause of yellowed, thick and /or deformed toenails is a fungal infection of the toenail. The fungus that infects the nail, most commonly, is the same fungus that causes athletes foot. It tends to be slowly progressive, damaging the nail to a greater and greater degree over time. The infection usually starts at the tip of the nail and works its way back. It usually is not painful and often not noticed until it has gotten well established. A single toenail or any number of nails can be affected. It can also occur on just one foot. Over time, the nail becomes thickened, crumbly, and distorted in appearance. Sweaty feet contribute to the initial infection process and contribute to its spread. The fungus prefers an environment that is moist, dark, and warm, which is why it affects the toenails much more often than fingernails. It does not spread through the blood stream. The infection limits itself to the nails and skin. It is often found in association with areas of dry scaly skin on the bottom of the foot or between the toes. The dry scaling skin is frequently found to be chronic athletes’ foot. It is not highly contagious, and family members are almost as likely to contract it from some other source as they are from the family member who has the infection. Keeping common showering areas clean is recommended, and sharing shoes should be avoided.
