Do Know Your Style And Plan Accordingly

Pin on Home decor

I used to love a bold, patterned curtain but over the years Ive learned that my style really leans towards using simpler curtains and allowing other parts of the room to be the star.

I like for my curtains to quietly layer into the space and feel like kind of a background character. You might prefer something that feels bold and exciting and thats fine! But if you try to go against your instincts and do something different because its trendy or someone else suggests it, youll be disappointed.

When we were planning this project, I heard from some people who were so disappointed that we werent doing something with some pattern, other people who felt like it would look terrible if it was anything but white, and still other people who thought we should get a couple of different colors and change them out seasonally!

The lesson here is that we all approach curtains differently, and thats fine! Just know yourself well enough to stay away from the patterned curtains if you actually prefer something plain.

    Coat Hooks As Versatile Tools

Coat hooks arent just for holding bags and coats, but they are also a great tool for hanging curtains. All you need to do is use a strong and double-sided mounting tape, which has high performance adhesive in order to bond the hooks to the wall. To make it extra secure, stick a strip on the surface of the wall first before placing the hooks against the wall.

    Pros

    • Coat hooks are much easier to use to hang even the heaviest curtains without any drilling
    • Cheap to buy and durable, especially the metal coat hooks

    Cons

    • To install these hooks, exact measurements are required
    • A little awkward when opening and closing curtains

Do Hang Your Curtains Close To The Ceiling

Im sure youve heard it before, but heres your official reminder to always hang your curtain rods high and wide. If you hang your rods to look like theyre hugging the window, it makes the window feel smaller. Hanging them higher than the window creates the illusion that the window is larger than it is, and that your ceilings are taller than they are!

Most stores only sell 84 curtains in-store, which can be confusing thats too short for even a standard 8 ceiling if youre hanging them high! Dont be fooled youre going to want 95 curtains for a standard 8 ceiling, and even longer for higher ceilings. Yes, it requires some extra effort , but I promise you its worth it.

Our curtains are 108 long. When youre determining how high to hang the rod itself, its really just a personal preference you can hang them so the curtains sit eeeeeever so slightly off the floor, so they barely skim the floor, or so they puddle a bit. I generally like mine to graze the floor just a bit somewhere between a skim and a puddle. Confusing, I know, but theres no real science to it hold them up at a couple of different heights and see what you like, then go from there. My general rule of thumb is to hang the rod about 3 below the ceiling.

    Use Temporary Command Hooks

If you love the look of a real curtain rodor have a penchant for decorative finialsthen a simple tension rod probably wont work for you. Instead, use a trick we often employ on photo shoots when we dont want to drill holes in our studio walls: pick up some Command hooks. They attach everything from picture frames to small shelves to the wall, yet one tug on the strips tab instantly releases the hold. Command sells metal hooks designed specifically to hold curtain rods, and the brushed nickel finish works with a wide variety of curtains. If you have a different style hook in mind, you can try MacGyvering your own, like Jamies Home Blog did here, by gluing two Command strips together and using them to hang up any decorative hook you like.

    Different Window Treatments With Curtains

How to Hang Curtains Over Blinds Without Nails

While we are at it, describing the different ways you can hang your curtains over blinds other than the tried-and-tested screws-and-drill system, it might be beneficial for you to understand what window treatments go best with curtains. Here are a few combinations you can try, or you can make your choice based on your own sense of aesthetics.

    1. Aluminum blinds with light filtering curtains: The blackout effect of mini blinds and their slick textured appeal will go well with an alternate window treatment that provides a solid, appealing contrast.

    2. Single-cell honeycomb shades with blackout curtains: The light filtering capability of the single-cell pockets, along with the room darkening fabric of blackout curtains will serve you well for a variety of purposes. Choose colors in the same family to amalgamate the shades well.

    3. Window shutters with floral curtains: The traditional meets the contemporary here. You may become as creative with the styles. This combination can work well on any window of the house.

To sum up, window curtains over your regular blinds is an especially good idea, when you reside in a place that is prone to fluctuate temperatures, and also when you need privacy. There are many alternative ways to hang your curtains over blinds, including coat hooks, tension rods, command hooks, and suspended rods.

Some options can be applied if someone wants to hang curtains without damaging the wall. Here are some of these simple but effective options:

If aesthetics arent your main priority or youre on a strict budget, heres an idea: create your own curtain rod brackets. This easy DIY can be done by using adhesive cup hooks and a skinny curtain rod or dowel stick thats lean enough to nestle into the cradle of the hook. 3Ms line of Command hooks are great for apartment dwellers because they can be removed without leaving behind any sticky residue.

Not only will your walls remain damage-free, but you dont have to sacrifice style. These temporary hooks come in finishes like brushed nickel, pewter and satin nickel so you dont have to settle for white plastic holding your attractive window treatments.

So youre looking for something a little fancier than plastic and adhesive. Clever curtain rod holders exist that allow you to mount a curtain rod directly to the inside corners of your window trim, instead of on the wall. These smart rods require no tools at all, just the power of your hands with a twisting and locking mechanism.

Instant Curtain Rod Holders wrap around the top corners of your window molding. A small V-shaped piece slides behind the molding to secure the holder in place. Any standard adjustable curtain rod will fit right onto the curtain rod holder. There is a screw hole on the top and side of the holder in case youd prefer to attach them more permanently. Instant Curtain Rod Holders come in a set for eight for around $9 on Amazon.

    Picking The Right Command Hooks

How To Hang Curtains Without Holes In The Wall

In an effort not to drill into the wall to hang a curtain rod, my next best option was to use Command Hooks. But not every Command Hook is created equal. Some are too small to hold a rod, and others cant hold the weight of fabric panels. I spent a lot of time researching options and even looked at a few in the store. All the hooks options below are both big enough to hold a rod and strong enough to support the weight of several curtain panels, but range in price-points, finishes, and weight.

After much hemming and hawing, I decided on these Jumbo Command Hooks. Although they are bulkier and not quite as pretty as the other options, I liked the way the rod fit into them best. And since I was trying to hang 10 lbs worth of curtains , I liked that each hook could hold up to 7.5 lbs on its own. Finally, they were also the cheapest and came in bulk sets, making it the most economical option for adding extra support as needed.

NOTE: I am very happy with my hook choice, but did choose to hack them a bit to make them look less chunky. If I wasnt hanging such heavy curtains, I likely would have gone with these.

Position The Tension Rod In The Window Or Doorway

A tension rod works by fitting into a space between two walls. Tension rods can also be used in the frame of a door or the framework of a window. Then you can rotate the whole rod to make it longer by extending the spring within the tension rod. As you turn the rod and it becomes longer, the tension rod gets wedged in between the frame of the two walls. Once the tension rod is secured in place, it should be snug and not able to be moved.

S To Hang Curtains Without A Rod
