Is Your Nail Polish Toxic? & Natural Alternatives!

This also means that mainstream nail polishes are evolving. Mainstream brands hear consumers want safer options and they adjust. When I sat down to start researching this post, I looked at mainstream brands too like Revlon, Chanel and Maybelline and honestly, I couldnt find not even one formula that still included toluene or dibutyl phthalate.

This is important to note because when brands are making claims like 10-free or 8-free or listing all of their NO ingredients, its not really setting them as much apart from the mainstream as these marketing tactics suggest.

Finding a cleaner nail polish really means taking a look at whats in the formula rather than whats not.

In addition to this, more thoughtful brands have not only stripped out the more dangerous ingredients, theyve also started adding in beautiful, nourishing ingredients too. This post is an opportunity to look at and celebrate these decisions as well.

Does Essie Nail Polish Contain Gluten

Essie nail polish does not contain gluten. Essie nail paints are 8-free. Their 8-free list states the toxic chemicals that they do not use in their products.

Apart from that list of chemicals, Essie does not claim to be free of products that do not belong in nail polish. So, even though they do not use gluten, they will not claim their nail paints to be free of it. The reason they stated this justification is that they want to keep their free of list simple.

Less Toxic Nail Polish Brands

Is All Nail Polish Toxic

Burns says certain brands have made significant strides to decrease the toxicity of their products, but its important to do your own research and read every products label as individual shades have different formulas.

Non-toxic claims dont really mean much since they arent regulated. Three or 7-free doesnt mean they are free of all chemicals, says Burns. Its really important for consumers to do their own homework, look at the packaging, and the Skin Deep Database.

EWGs Skin Deep Database rates individual products on the hazard levels of its ingredients. You can search by brand, product, and ingredient. EWG VERIFIED products that meet EWG’s strictest standards for human health.

Sally Hansen Good Kind Pure

vegan

The most shocking discovery of this entire study was realizing Sally Hansen made it to our top 5. I mean, GO SALLY!

Sally Hansens polish touts itself as the first plant-based 16-free vegan nail polish . It comes in 30 shades, is 77% naturally derived and also includes a new plant-based brush. And Ive gotta say, the brush is actually everything here. Its wider than normal but not clunky and it delivers a seamless, dare I say, PRO application.

Sally Hansen GOOD. KIND. PURE is formulated without the aforementioned concerning nail polish ingredients and its also void of benzophenone-1 and benzophenone-3 as well.

In fact, Sally Hansen goes above and beyond adding the following nourishing ingredients into their polish formulas:

  • Methylthioppopylamido acetyl methionine: An antioxidant peptide that has DNA protection, cell protection and light protection benefits.
  • Persea gratissima fruit extract: An effective skin conditioner.
  • Camellia sinensis leaf extract: Contains antioxidants and is effective for protecting skin cells against damage from sun exposure.
  • Spinacia oleracea leaf extract: An effective skin conditioner.

The Toxins In Nail Polish Arent Really Regulated

Unfortunately, as we all regrettably know, nail polishes, like other cosmetics, are not really regulated by the Food and Drug Administration . While technically under the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act , its regulated, under this law, nail products can pretty much do whatever they want. In other words, the cosmetic industrys idea of regulation is more like putting toddlers in charge of snack time. Imagine if you gave a toddler the ability to eat whatever they wanted with no oversight, including candy & chips. There would be zero healthy requirements and it would be very messy. Very messy. Obviously.

Lets be clear here, nail polishes like most other cosmetics can go on the market with prior FDA testing and, by law nail polish sold on a retail basis to consumers in stores or online must also bear a list of ingredients, by order of predominance. And sometimes, they even do! Throughout this investigation, I noticed a number of brands that I had to specifically email for their ingredients, including GOAT . But amazingly, most of them promptly replied to us immediately, which was so different than our makeup investigation.

Another issue I continued running into is the names of the ingredients can be tricky. Did you happen to know, for example, that formaldehyde resin one of the 10 free ingredients can also be listed as the following:

  • quaternium-15,

These chemicals, although similar, are very difficult for the average consumer to differentiate and track.

What About 12 14 16

So, wait. Why did you stop at 10-free? Ive seen all kinds of brands that have over 10-free.

Heres the thing, the qualifications for being 10-Free are already dealing with different answers to what that last ingredient is. The farther up you go? The more cloudy the definition becomes. Basically, there isnt a way for us to do that cause its lots of marketing.

Is It Healthier To Paint Your Nails Yourself Or Get Them Done In A Salon

While Burns says where you get your nails done is a personal choice, more factors are in your control at home. You know exactly what products you are using, and there is less exposure to toxic fumes. The EWG doesnt evaluate salon practices or products.

However, if you cant go without a regular trip to your salon, there are ways to make this practice greener. Most salons let you bring your own polish, and you can research businesses dedicated to sustainability.

If you enjoy painting your nails, you are going to have to make a personal decision on where you get them done and what polishes you use. Until we have set beauty standards, it’s really a consumer choice, says Burns. Thats why we have Skin Deep. Not everyone may agree on the same product, so we have a variety of products that best meets individual needs.

Does Essie Nail Polish Contain Tphp

Triphenyl phosphate is sometimes used as a plasticizer in nail polish. But Essie has included this chemical in their 8-free list of ingredients. So, Essie nail polish does not contain TPhP.

TPhP is harmful and may cause skin allergies. It can also, at times, cause adverse effects on the liver and kidneys.

Are There Toxins Nail Polish

Ill be honest with you. Until recently, I have never really questioned the safety of my nail polish. If anything, I had guessed that my nail polish remover is much more of a hazard than the nail polish itself. Turns out, I was wrong.

We went through numerous studies to learn about toxins in nail polish and only a few days later, I had cleared out my entire nail polish collection and exchanged it for safe polishes.

On a global scale, 85-90% of women and 10-12% of men use nail care products across the world. Thats a significant amount considering that the EWG found toxins in over 1,500 nail products including polishes made by Sally Hansen, OPI, Wet N Wild, butter LONDON, Essie, Revlon, Milani, SpaRitual, Orly, theBalm, Nuance by Salma Hayek, Maybelline, and Beauty Without Cruelty. ,

The bad boys? Formaldehyde, toluene, plasticizers , triphenyl phosphate , camphor, ethyl tosylamide, xylene, benzophenones, and butyl alcohol.

A recent study tested 10 nail polishes for TPHP and found it in eight of them. Interestingly, clear polishes generally contain more TPHP than colored polishes. More importantly, two of the eight polishes that tested positive for TPHP did not disclose its presence on product labels. However, looking for a non-toxic certified product in the first place will simplify your search for a new polish.

Conventional Nail Polish Sure Does Stink

No, I mean nail polish LITERALLY stinks. Inhalation of chemical contaminants is so bad that New York City has passed laws to protect workers in nail parlors. The toxic trio in many nail polish brands are full of toluene, dibutyl phthalate, and formaldehyde. These chemicals are linked to a host of health concerns. In fact, nail workers have elevated rates of death from Hodgkins disease, low birth-weight babies and of multiple myeloma, a form of cancer.

So, whats a nail polish lover to do? You can make your own nail polish, which is overly complicated becausecome on! OR you can get hip to the idea that many companies are beginning to launch cleaner, safer, and less toxic nail polish lines with colors youd actually want to wear.

This investigation should help bring to light the availability of safer types of nail polish, learn to make informed decisions, and keep calm and carry on .
