What Are The Cons
If you askexperts about the use of the dip powder nails over more familiar gels andacrylics, most say that they do come with a few negatives to consider. Whileall seem in perfect agreement that this type of manicure is a good option, mostalso give out such advice with a few caveats. These include:
- Bonding agents Though you might see dip powder nails marketed or touted as more natural and even organic, the simple truth of the matter is that the bonding resin or coat is often full of the main ingredient used in Krazy Glue and other similar products. While this is the same for gel and acrylic polishes, too, it is something to remain aware of if you are opting for it because it is described as natural.
- Removal One of the biggest issues youll hear and read experts discuss is the process needed to remove the dip powder coatings. While we will itemize it a bit later in this article, you should consider what one scientist said of it: the removal process should be considered for any type of nail polish. The process for this treatment is lengthy and cannot be rushed, and though it should not harm the nails, there is a potential for damage if you do skip steps, take shortcuts or do anything to rush the process.

The main accolade for dip powder nails is that they dont require UV light to cure, unlike their gel counterparts. But that doesnt mean they wont cause any damage to your nails. Like with any manicure, youre buffing and filing your nails. But, with SNS youre coating them with a strong, bonding, glue-like resin.
There are also some slight sanitation concerns if salons are using the same jar for multiple clients.

Is Dip Powder Bad For Your Nails
Pros are kinda torn on whether dip powder is good for your nails. One of the biggest mistakes your nail technician can make while applying dip powder? Literally dipping your nails into the jar of powder âunless youâre the only customer using the jar, itâs gonna be loaded with bacteria. The safe route is to have the powder dusted on your nails with a brush.
You shouldnât expect any long-term damage from dip powder, so long as your technician is using a safe formula. Be on the lookout for off-brand dip powders, which are sometimes spiked with harmful chemicalsâas with any beauty treatment, donât be afraid to ask your technician tons of questions before you get started .

Update: New Kits Reviewed Below
Since we last reviewed the best nail dipping powders, there have been some a few more impressive brands to enter the nail dip scene! We have four new exciting brands to test out, and see how they stack up to the coveted SNS nail powder dip!
The DipWell Nail dipping powder system was one of the first acrylic dip powders around, and their system aims to make nail dip easy for all.
The packaging is pretty, and the 5 nail polishes are labeled by number, so its easy to know which step is next. It comes with a few powders so you can perform a french manicure or natural nail color easily with this system.
I opted to do the midnight pink color, since this kit does not come with a french nail dip tray. If you wanted to do a french manicure with this kit, you do not HAVE to have the tray, but it certainly makes it a lot easier. I was able to follow the instructions and cute a cute manicure in about 20 minutes.
The manicure lasted 2 weeks before it looked grown out. I had a minor chip on the thumb but I think I messed up a little during the application. The midnight pink isnt super dark so I did an extra dip in the jar, and it looked much better.
The colors included are pretty basic and simple, which is great for people who always do natural nails. If you want a little bit more edgy colors youd have to buy them separately.

What Are The Benefits Of Dip Powder Nails
- No UV lights needed: With gel nails, you have to cure your nails between each coat using UV light. However, with SNS or dip powder nails, once you put the top coat on, youre good to go.
- You can DIY-it: If you can paint your nails at home, you can also do dip powder nails at home! Or your roommate with surgeon-like hands can help you out.
- It lasts longer: While gel manicures last longer than traditional polish, dip powder nails last longer than gel. Were not saying its a competition or anything but it is.
Can You Mix Dipping Powder Brands
Dipping systems consist of powders and liquids that react to create a durable coating on the nail.
Although there may be a little variation between brands, many powders and liquids can be mixed and matched. It works best if you stay consistent by using only liquids from one brand, even if you use a different companys dip powders.
Watch for pre-bonded powders, though. You may need to stick with the specific liquids required for them.

How Does Dip Powders Work
Dip nails are often referred to as acrylic lite nails because the manicure is conducted with an acrylic-based powder.
After you open your nail dipping powder kit, you should always read the manufacturers instructions on how to use it.
Generally, you start with your base coat. After you apply a thin layer of base coat, you dip your finger in the dip powder. Usually, this step is repeated twice, but it may be a different order for different nail dipping powder kits.
Always follow manufacturer instructions!
The fantastic thing about dip powder nails is that they dont demand as much filing as builder gels or other nail extension methods. All you need to do is simply file and shape your nail gently and then apply your topcoat. The nail is now ready for an application of cuticle oil.
Another thing I love about nail dip powders is the fact you dont need a UV light in order to cure your nails. This means that you dont need to deal with the danger that comes with it. Unlike hard gels and gel polishes, dip powders dry quickly with no UV/LED light.

How To Choose Between Dip Powder And Acrylic Nails
Before using the dip system, Aaron always likes to know what her clients long-term care wishes are for their nails. Does the client wish to be as natural as possible or would they care to extend the nails with tips? she muses. Are they okay soaking off with every visit? Do they want natural colored nails or a color polished look? These questions determine whether dip or acrylic is best. For clients that are accustomed to gel polish on their natural nails, Aaron says that an upgrade to the dip system is perfect. These clients are already used to soaking off every two to three weeks and with dip powder, it would be no different, she explains. For clients that are used to acrylic nails, I only suggest dip powder to them when its time for a new set. So when soaking off for a new set I begin the consultation by first looking at the condition of the clients nails and asking: Do you want to keep your natural nails and if so at what length? Depending on their answer, Aaron will recommend dip powder, as its typically gentler than classic acrylic.
