How Do You Make Nail Polish

Here Are Some Ways To Care For Your Polishes And Prevent Them From Getting Too Thick:

How to make Nail Polish
  • Store the bottle in a cool dark place with a consistent temperature thats not too hot or cold. Avoid bathrooms as the temperature is constantly changing with the showers and humid atmosphere.
  • Keep it away from direct sunlight and heat as most formulas are flammable.
  • Store the bottle upright in the shelf or drawer.
  • Finally, know when to say goodbye. Nail polish just like makeup has its own shelf life too. If its become too sludge-like just toss the bottles and make peace with it.

Mixing The Pigment With Nitrocellulose And Plasticizer

  • 1 The pigments are mixed with nitrocellulose and plasticizer using a”two-roll” differential speed mill. This mill grinds the pigment between a pair of rollers that are able to work with increasing speed as the pigment is ground down. The goal is to produce fine dispersion of the color. A variation of this mill is the Banbury Mixer .
  • 2 When properly and fully milled, the mixture is removed from the mill in sheet form and then broken up into small chips for mixing with the solvent. The mixing is performed in kettles that can hold anywhere from 5 to 2,000 gallons. Stainless steel must be used because the nitrocellulose is extremely reactive in the presence of iron. The kettles are jacketed so that the mixture can be cooled by circulating cold water or another liquid around the outside of the kettle. The temperature of the kettle, and the rate of cooling, are controlled by both computers and technicians.

This step is performed in a special room or area designed to control the hazards of fire and explosion. Most modern factories perform this step in an area with walls that will close in if an alarm sounds and, in the event of explosion, with ceilings that will safely blow off without endangering the rest of the structure.

Dont Cut Your Gel Manicure

If youve had your manicure on for some time, you might be sick of how long your nails are and wondering Can I cut nails with gel polish? or Can I file nails with gel polish?

If you want your polish to last long, then the answer is no. If you cut or file them, you will be breaking the gel seal, which means that your polish is more likely to come off.

Nail Polish Hack #: Create A Cool Marbled Effect With A Water Cup

How to Do Gel Nails at Home

If youre just trying to figure out how to paint on a simple coat of nail polish without getting it all over your hands, this nail art look is for you. First, choose an accent finger and tape underneath and around your nail to protect your skin. Next, fill a small paper cup with filtered, room-temperature water. Grab two different colors of paint and add drops of each polish into the cup of water, alternating paints each time. Once youve added a few drops, grab an open paper clip and use the tip to swirl the layers together to create the design you want. Then, stick your finger into the cup with your nail facing the paint layer. Holding your finger in the cup for a few seconds, use your paper clip to pull the rest of the paint away from your finger. Then, slowly remove your finger from the water and remove the tape to clean up the edges.

Using Eye Shadow And Clear Polish

  • 1Select eyeshadow in the color of your choice. Pick eyeshadow that you dont plan to use again. You can make nail polish from any color eyeshadow you want. You could even mix a few eyeshadow colors together to create your own custom shade.
  • 2Crush the eyeshadow in a Ziploc bag. If your eyeshadow is a loose powder you can skip this step, but the solid blocks of eyeshadow need to be crushed. Put the eyeshadow into a Ziploc bag and crush with a spoon, the handle of a makeup brush, or a rolling pin. Crush until it is a fine, consistent powder with no lumps remaining.
  • Be diligent with this. If it’s not smooth when you dump it into your polish, it won’t mix well into the clear polish.
  • Take care not to puncture the bag.
  • 3Snip off one corner of the bag. You want a tiny opening, so make sure you only cut the very end of the corner off of the bag.
  • Alternatively, you could make a small paper funnel and pour the eyeshadow from the bag into the clear nail polish using the funnel.
  • 4Pour the eyeshadow into a bottle of clear nail polish. Open the bottle of clear nail polish. It should be three-quarters full or less to make room for the powder. Position the cut corner of the bag in the neck of the bottle, but take care not to dip it in the polish.
  • The amount of eyeshadow you add will determine how rich and dark the color is. Add a little shadow at a time until you reach the desired shade.
  • Alternatively, you can use white nail polish to create a more opaque color.

    • Next, you are gonna have to check your polish every 10 minutes or so to see its consistency.
    • You can use a toothpick to examine the polish.
    • Finally, once the polish is thick enough you can screw on back its cover.

I really do like this more than most polish I’ve bought! The polish I made from eyeshadow is really matte and shimmery, and it dries quicker than normal polish as well. The glitter polish turned out great as well – just make sure to do a clear top coat over it because craft glitter can be a little chunky. You don’t want the glitter snagging on your clothes/hair/pets/whatever. :DNow we’ll have to see how long it lasts! I ended up doing a base coat of the purple polish I made, covering that with the gold glitter polish, and topping that with a clear top coat. I’ll report back! It’s held up well so far and I’ve had a hot shower and washed a load of dishes since yesterday.POLISH UPDATE: It ended up lasting four days, which is not bad for cheapy nail polish. I think I could have worn it longer – I only had one tiny chip on my right hand! Came off pretty easy too, but the glitter is always tricky. :)COMMENT UPDATE: A few of you have suggested putting either a bb or a glass bead into the bottle to help the polish get mixed. I’m going to do this myself and I think anyone who tries this should do it too. I hadn’t thought of it! 😀

Nail Polish Hack #1: Use Stickers To Organize Your Nail Polishes

If youve got a nail polish collection that could rival that of a salon, you can easily organize your stash with a few stickers and swatches. Paint a strip of polish on an adhesive file folder label, punch out a hole, and stick the paint sample on the top of the nail polish bottle. Repeat this for all of your polishes, set them in a box, and store them in a cool, dry place.

Pour The Crushed Eyeshadow Powder Into Your Clear Nail Polish

Once your eyeshadow is crushed to a fine powder, you can use the same cuticle pusher from step one as a mini shovel to scoop the powder into the nail polish. I found it fairly easy to get the powder into the clear polish with minimal spillage, but you can also make a mini paper funnel using a sticky note if you’re worried about making a mess. Regardless, work on top of a cutting board or paper towel, because a little spilling is inevitable.

The amount of eyeshadow you add to your polish is completely up to you. The more nail polish you add, the more opaque your DIY formula will be. I added the full pan of eyeshadow as seen here, which created an opaque polish. For more sheer color, add about half the pan.

Using base or top coat with a clear container will help build your way to your ideal nail polish opacity. As you add a little bit of powder, do a quick shake of the bottle to see if you’ve reached your desired hue.
