Soak Your Nails In An Acetone Bath

HOW TO DO DIP POWDER NAILS AT HOME

Before you soak your nails in acetone, nail artist Amy Le has a tip to help protect your skin: rub petroleum jelly on your fingertips and into your cuticles, avoiding your nail bed. “This will help prevent the skin around your nails from drying out,” she says. Next, pour the acetone into a bowl and place both hands in, fully submerging each nail . In order for the dip powder to loosen, you will need to soak your nails for at least 10 to 20 minutes, says Le. A good indicator youre done? The dip should flake off easily. If it doesnt, she suggests soaking your nails for an additional five to seven minutes. Remember: Patience is your friend during the removal process.

What Are Dip Powder Nails

Dip powder nails are created using the technique of dipping nails into colored powder. The dip powder can also be brushed onto the nail. Then, the powder is sealed with a clear top coat.

This creates a long-lasting, chip-free manicure for up to a month. Plus, theres no polish smell!

In a salon, you can pay up to $50 for a dip powder nail manicure. The AZUREBEAUTY DIY dip powder nail kit I used from Modelones is only $35.99. It comes with five colors and each color can be used multiple times, so I worked out that each manicure I do at home only costs me around $3!

So, lets get started.

Tips For A Perfect Dip Powder Manicure

Brand leaders and top nail techs share insider secrets on how to achieve the perfect dip powder manicure.

Brand leaders and top nail techs share insider secrets on how to achieve the perfect dip powder manicure.

1. Water, Water, Nowhere: Sanitize your clients hands by cleaning them with a lint-free wipe, and avoid washing during the service. Dip systems dont interact well with water, as it can result in excessively long dry times or uneven shine. Hoang Lefty, educator, SuperNail

2. Safety First: Because dipping powder tends to be far finer than acrylic, plunging in can create airborne dust. I cover my workstation with a damp towel to eliminate some of those particles. Keeping both clients and techs healthy is most important. Tommy Phan, educational consultant, EzFlow

3. Oil-Free: The Way to Be: For a long-lasting dip powder mani, you must first rid the nail plate of oil. Create a rough surface, and remove the natural shine with a medium-grit file. Then, apply a bonder or dehydrator. Clarissa Leon, marketing director, Kiara Sky

4. Shake, Rattle and Roll: Dip powders tend to separate over time. To avoid dreaded blotchy color, shake and roll the jars before use. Storing them upside down can also help when you flip them over, gravity naturally mixes the contents. Hellen Luu, educator manager, Bio Seaweed Gel

How To Apply Dip Powder Nails Without A Uv Light

Most dip nail liquid systems use this method of application. It does not require a UV light to apply and is frequently referred to as the “dip top coat” application method. What many people don’t realize is that the base dip liquid step is the same exact liquid as a dip top coat. Our Fairy Glamor system does not have a dip top coat because you can use the dip base as a top coat if you do not want to use the UV method.

What you will need:

  • Base dip liquid or dip top coat
  • Activator
  • How to apply your dip top coat.

  • Apply dip base or top coat over your finished dip powder nails
  • Wait around 2-3 seconds and then apply activator over your dip base
  • Apply another layer of dip base or dip top
  • Apply activator to cure
  • Wipe your dip top coat with a paper towel between applications. This will prevent the activator from hardening the brush.
  • Which method is better, dip top coat or gel top coat for at home dip nails?

Dip top coat and gel top coat both have their pros and cons. Gel top coats tend to be glossier and shinier than dip top coats and take less layers to look pretty. Dip top coats tend to take around 2-3 layers to get a glossy effect. However, dip tip coats are great if you are worried about exposing your skin to UV rays. Dip top coats also tend to stick better to dip powder, and last longer than gel top coats.

Here is a quick overview of the tips we shared for the dip nail application process:

What Do I Need To Get Started

Here is a list of the critical components. You’ll definitely need these.

    • Dipsy Dip Set of 5 Liquids – this kit includes all five of our liquids, each of which plays an important role in dipping your nails. The set includes:
    • Primer – Crucial to cleaning and dehydrating your nail surface in preparation for dipping.
    • Base Coat – This is the “glue” that will hold the powder onto your nail once you dip.
    • Activator – Activator is the magic ingredient that changes the dipped nail from a powdered look to a painted look.
    • Top Coat – Top coat is another glue-like liquid that gives you a durable, shiny finish.

  • Nail File – Whether you use an emery board or a glass nail file, you’ll want something to shape your nail.

  • Buffer – A buffer is an important tool for dipping. It helps give you a smooth, shiny, salon-quality surface. We highly recommend our Not Your Ordinary Nail Buffer.
  • Of course, there are some additional tools that you should have in your dipping toolbox. Here are two that we suggest:

    Is It Worth It

How to do your own nails (dip powder) at home.

In a pre-pandemic world, an 11-step beauty treatment wouldn’t make my to-do list, but we’re living in unprecedented times and I’m suddenly doing unprecedented things. Also, the end result is actually quite impressive and worth the effort.

If you take the time to prep your nails correctly, that is shape, buff and apply the base layer correctly, the manicure will easily last up to three weeks.

As someone who likes to keep my nails short, I found I was filing them down after about two and ready for a colour change well before the mani was ready to be removed. It’s staying power is no different to an in-salon SNS mani.

The initial outlay might seem like a lot, but if you’re someone who goes to the salon monthly and pays $60-$70 for the pleasure, you’ll enjoy major savings three-to-four manicures in.

Step 5 // Repeat Two More Times

Apply a second thin, even coat of Base Gel #2 to one nail. The nail will have a wet look wherever the Gel Base is applied. Repeat the process of dipping in the powder and tap off the extra powder. Continue across all nails, then brush off the excess.

Repeat one more time, for three thin, even powder coats. You should notice the color has become more even and opaque.

    Well Whats The Verdict

The cons dont really outweigh the pros, and even if they are about even, most professionals will say that this option seems to be one that will remain for years to come. Because the process is so simple and straightforward, and capable of being done well by experts and novices alike, it is important that we focus I on that one negative the removal process. This is to ensure that it is done properly, safely and without harming the nails.

How Do You Remove Dip Powder Manicures

Again here, youll want to refer to the instructions included in whichever kit youve purchased. However, dip powder manicures generally always have to be soaked off with acetonedo not, under any circumstances, try to peel or pick off the color. Doing so will literally rip off the top layer of your actual nail. Ouch!

Instead, your best bet is to wrap each nail in an acetone-soaked cotton ball or dip it into in a small bowl of acetone, for at least ten minutes. In order for dip powder color to be removed, the bond between the lacquer and the nail must be dissolved. The best part is, though this soaking process may seem tedious, once the color is dissolved it should wipe off easily and cleanly .

    How Are Acrylic Nails Formed

There are two different ways to build acrylic nails. You can either use a nail form , or you can use half-cover nail tips .

    Heres what youll need:

    • Cuticle remover
    • Half-cover nail tips or nail forms
    • Nail glue, if using nail tips
    • Monomer liquid

    Steps:

  • Begin by applying a cuticle remover and pushing your cuticles back.
  • Cut your natural nails way down there should only be a thin sliver of white visible.
  • File the top of your nail beds to remove the shiny layer this helps the acrylic stick.
  • Remove the nail dust with a lint-free wipe soaked in rubbing alcohol
  • If using half-cover nail tips, find the appropriately sized tip for each nail. Apply some nail glue to the base of the tip and stick it to the natural nail, ensuring it’s straight.
  • Clip and file the tip to your desired shape and length.
  • Paint on an acrylic nail primer or swipe some acetone over the nail beds this helps the acrylic stick to the nail.
  • If using acrylic nail forms, put those on now.
  • Pour some monomer fluid into a small glass.
  • Dip your acrylic nail brush into the monomer fluid and press the brush against the glass to remove any excess liquid.
  • Gently tap the monomer-soaked brush into your acrylic powder at a 45-degree angle just the tip!
  • Apply the bead of acrylic slightly below the line between your natural nail bed and the tip or just below the nail form.
  • Begin swiping the acrylic down the tip/form in small brushstrokes, all in the same direction.

How Much Do Dip Nails Cost

Ive clearly explained why Im overly obsessed with dip nails, but one of the biggest questions is always: how much do dip nails cost at an average salon?

The question of how much dip nails cost will depend on your location and salon, but I can give you a general idea.

The cost of a regular dip manicure should be anywhere from $30-$50, including tax but before adding a tip. Gel tips will run you about $20-$30 extra, depending on how many you need and what type of tips the salon uses.

You should always ask how much dip nails cost before booking with a salon. If the price is too low, they might use 2nd rate dip products, while a super high price just wont be affordable for regular upkeep.

I also recommend asking how much do dip nails cost if youre planning on adding fancy designs, sparkle nail accents, or each nail in a different color.

If youre wondering how much dip nails cost at home, the answer will depend on the kit you get. Ill link some of my favorite kits a bit lower down, but the price will mainly be for the initial investment. If youre committed to doing dip nails at home over time, then the cost will get cheaper each time you do them.
