How to Remove Gel Nails at Home! Damage-Free!

We know too well the temptation that comes with wanting to pick and peel off your gel polish. That moment of satisfaction will be fleeting, but the damage you inflict on your nails could take weeks to repair. Sarah Gibson Tuttle, CEO and founder of the celeb-favorite nail salon Olive & June, shares the rundown on how to safely remove a gel manicure at home.

How To Apply Gel Nails At Home

Jenni Draper talks us through how to do the ultimate at-home gel manicure in 10 simple steps :

1. Ensure cuticles are pushed back using a tool like Tweezerman Dual Sided Pushy Cuticle Stick, £16, but avoid using cuticle clippers. If the cuticles are cut incorrectly it can lead to infections and cause the skin to grow back thicker, so leave that to the experts.

2. File your nails to your preferred length and shape . Dont seesaw with your file, just go gently in one direction and back again the other way.

3. Using a soft nail buffer, go from the cuticle to the free edge , removing shine and leaving the nails with a smooth, ridge-free base. Theres no need to over-buff, just go gently, before brushing any excess dust off.

4. Using a lint-free wipe and a nail cleanser for gels, scrub over the nails to remove oils and dust, leaving them squeaky clean.

5. Apply a thin layer of specialised gel base coat, being careful to only apply to the nail, avoiding the skin. If any touches the skin, use a cuticle or cocktail stick to remove it straight away, before curing in the LED light box recommended for your gel system, for the recommended amount of time.

8. Apply your second coat of colour, perfecting your coverage. Repeat steps 6 and 7.

10. Finally, wipe over the nails with a cleanser from your kit and finish off with a nourishing nail oil and hand cream. I love DadiOil, £7.50, and Chanel La Creme Main, £45.

Diy With Tinfoil And Cotton Balls

While the tinfoil method is similar to the soaking method, this technique allows you to soak just your fingernails in acetone preventing the rest of your fingertips from coming into contact with it.

This method is a little more complicated if youre doing it by yourself. By the time youre on your last few fingers, it can be difficult to apply without help.

To try the tinfoil method, you can:

  • Cut or tear your tinfoil into 10 medium-sized squares. Each piece should be large enough to wrap completely around your fingertip while holding a small cotton ball against your fingernail.
  • After filing the top of your manicure, soak each cotton ball in acetone, and place it on your fingernail starting with your nondominant hand. Use a piece of tinfoil to secure the cotton-soaked acetone to your nail.
  • Allow your nails to soak for 10 to 15 minutes.
  • Check your nails. Once again, the polish should begin to lift away from your nails. This should make it easy for you to gently scrape the polish from your nails with a cuticle stick.
  • Apply a small drop of cuticle oil, if necessary.

    Give Your Nails Some Tlc

Acetone is drying, so it’s important to restore moisture to your nails and hands after a DIY removal.

“After removing the gel, use a gentle buffing block to smooth out the surface of the nail,” she says. When the nail is clean, Poole recommends soaking the nails with cuticle oil, like Sally Hansen Vitamin E Oil . After a few minutes, wash your hands and apply an ample amount of hand cream to restore moisture. Do this for several nights and then feel free to polish back up. If you need to reapply gel the same day, try to give your nails a few hours to breathe first.

Soak Your Nails In 100% Pure Acetone

    Pin on Beauty

There are two different ways you can soak your nails, but for either method, it’s essential that you use a 100% pure acetone nail polish remover. “I normally recommend using low-acetone or acetone-free nail polish removers, but these aren’t strong enough to remove gel formulas,” says Soon.

You can soak your fingertips in a small bowl filled with acetone, but Soon prefers to use cotton ballswhich are closer to your nails’ size and shape than cotton padssaturated with acetone. “This way, your fingers don’t have to be fully drenched, which can lead to incredibly dry skin,” she says. Place an acetone-soaked cotton ball over the entire nail, then wrap a piece of foil around your nail to hold it in place. Repeat this process on all 10 fingers.

Protect Your Skin With Cuticle Oil Or Cream

In addition to prepping your nails, you’ll also want to prep the skin around your nails by applying a heavy layer of cuticle oil or cream . That will help protect your skin from the acetone, which can be very drying. “Try to avoid getting any cream or oil on the nail itself, though, as that will slow down the removal process,” Soon warns.

    Wrap Each Nail In Foil

Douse cotton balls in 100 percent acetone and place one on each nail. According to Allure, the cotton balls hold more remover than pads and better fit the nail shape to make removing gel polish go faster. Then wrap each finger in a three-inch square of foil. This will hold the acetone-soaked cotton on the nail and keep the solution from evaporating, Soon explains.

Soak Your Nails In Acetone Using Cotton Balls And Aluminum Foil

Acetone is stronger and more effective than non-acetone nail polish remover, making it exactly what you need to remove your gel nail polish. Drench some cotton balls with the stuff, then hold them in place on your nails by wrapping each finger with aluminum foil. According to Yankee, this traps in heat to help the gel break down faster. Gel polish formulas vary in strength, so the wait time can be anywhere between 10 and 20 minutes. If you dont get it exactly right, you can always rewrap and keep on soaking.

Yankee’s expert tip: Sometimes its best to do one hand at a time at home. I like to start with the dominant hand to get the toughest part out of the way. So if youre a lefty, begin soaking the nails on your left hand, and then your right hand will be a breeze. Its a small change, but it makes a huge difference, she says.

“Another tip for getting that freshly manicured, always glossy look is to apply a thin coat of top coat every other day. This will protect the color, finish, and extend the life of your manicure, because it acts as a layer of defense against everything your hands come in contact with,” Tuttle concludes.

My Favourite Polishes And Nail Art

The majority of my gel polishes are fromMylee and Bluesky which are two affordable but high-quality brands that sell their polishes for around £6 to £8, and have kits that you can buy if you want to build up your collection and reduce the price per bottle.

Another gel polish brand that I hear a lot about but have yet to try is The Gel Bottle Inc, their polishes are a bit more expensive at just under £15 each, but a lot of the nail artists I follow on Instagram use their polishes so it must be worth the price.

They also have a huge range of colours so I will definitely be making an order from them soon.

My nail colours of choice normally fall somewhere in the pink/red colour spectrum, with the odd appearance from a pastel-hue some of my favourite shades including Creekside , Piping Hot and French Cancan .

Ive also been saving some ideas to my that I will be trying out soon.

I plan to order some nail art brushes and tools so I can attempt some more intricate designs, but for the meantime here are a few ideas that Ive found that look easy enough to do with my limited amount of tools and skill.
