What Are The Risk Factors For Toenail Onychomycosis

The most prevalent predisposing risk factor for developing onychomycosis is advanced age, which is reported to be 18.2% in patients 6079 years of age, compared to 0.7% in patients younger than 19 years of age. Further, men are up to three times more likely to have onychomycosis than women, though the reasons for this gender difference are not clear . Moreover, the low prevalence of infection in people whose spouses have onychomycosis compared to the prevalence among their children suggests a genetic risk factor . Though extremely rare, one study reported four family members from seven unrelated groups with a common genetic trait who developed a dermatophyte infection of deep tissues that proved fatal .

Other risk factors include diabetes and conditions contributing to poor peripheral circulation . In fact, onychomycosis may represent an important predictor for the development of diabetic foot syndrome and foot ulcers . Patients who are immunosuppressed, such as those with HIV infection and those undergoing cancer therapy, are also predisposed to fungal nail infection . There is at least one case report of a toenail infection caused by Fusarium that developed into a fatal systemic infection in a lymphoma patient following a bone marrow transplant .

When To See A Doctor

In most cases, toenail fungus is considered a cosmetic problem. Still, it may cause serious complications for some people.

If you have diabetes, toenail fungus may lead to foot ulcers or other foot problems. According to a 2012 study, chronic toenail fungus is a significant risk factor for bacterial cellulitis of the leg.

If you have diabetes or a weakened immune system, you shouldnt use home remedies for toenail fungus. Contact your doctor for the appropriate course of action.

Softening And Scraping Away The Nail

As it can take a long time for antifungal medication to work, some people may prefer to use a treatment that involves softening and removing infected parts of nail over a few weeks.

Treatment kits are available from pharmacies that contain a 40% urea paste, plasters and a scraping device. The paste softens the infected parts of the nail, allowing them to be scraped away so they can be gradually replaced with healthy nail.

Usually, it first appears on the edge of your nail, under the tip, as a white or yellow streak. This streak gradually spreads down the side of your nail to the base.

Eventually, your nail becomes brittle, discoloured, thickened and distorted. It can become so thick that it hurts when pressed against the side of a shoe.

The nail may end up crumbling and splitting, and separating from the skin. It often turns yellow or brown.

The surrounding skin may also become infected and may itch, crack, form a blister, or appear white especially between the toes. Its important to act quickly if you notice any of these symptoms. If you don’t treat the infection, there’s a chance it will worsen and spread to other nails.

How To Get Rid Of An Ingrown Toenail

By Kyra Oliver

If youve ever had an ingrown toenail, you know the pain that it can cause. Not only that, but its annoying we use our toes in some way or another as part of our usual daily movement, and this use and constant knocking seems to aggravate the nail even more. It makes the pain more noticeable and seems to last forever!

An ingrown toenail, or onychocryptosis, may occur at any age and is one of the mostly common toenail problems. It can be a painful condition that can easily become infected without proper care. While more studies need to be conducted, there are a few that suggest a slightly higher male-to-female ratio, particularly in the 1425 age group however, it can affect patients of any age.

There are multiple reasons why an ingrown toenail develops, including:

  • improper nail-cutting technique
  • pressure from abutting digits caused by hallux valgus or lesser toe deformities
  • the presence of a subungual exostosis
  • occasionally, the use of isotretinoin in the treatment of severe acne

Something thats often forgotten is that toenail fungus can become part of the problem too. Usually, nail fungus occurs when fungus enters the nail through a small trauma, such as a cut or break in the nail. Though often a misconception, nail fungus is not caused by poor hygiene. However, if you have an ingrown toenail, you need to be conscious of keeping the area clean.

Why Does It Develop

A fungal nail infection occurs from the overgrowth of fungi in, under, or on the nail. Fungi thrive in warm, moist environments, so this type of environment can cause them to naturally overpopulate. The same fungi that cause jock itch, athletes foot, and ringworm can cause nail infections.

Fungi that are already present in or on your body can cause nail infections. If you have come in contact with someone else who has a fungal infection, you may have contracted it as well. Fungal infections affect toenails more commonly than fingernails, likely because your toes are usually confined to shoes, where theyre in a warm, moist environment.

If you get a manicure or pedicure at a nail salon, be sure to ask how the staff disinfects their tools and how often they do it. Tools, such as emery boards and nail clippers, can spread fungal infections from person to person if theyre not sanitized.

Soaking An Infected Toe

Soaking an infected toe in warm water gives some benefits in improving its condition. It brings down the inflammation caused by fungal infection or ingrown nail. The treatments also softens the hardened skin around the nail or the calluses occurring around the toe. To soak the affected toe, add some teaspoons of sea salt to your bathtub or large bucket filled up with very warm water. Soak the toes for 15 minutes and pat it dry afterwards. Repeat the treatment several times daily until the pain subsides and the inflammation improved.

What Causes An Infected Toe

How to Get Rid of Toenail Fungus! | Dr. Doug Willen

An infection in the skin around the toenail is called paronychia. Itâs normally caused by a bacterium. The toenail can also be infected with a fungus.

If your toe is infected, one of these things might be to blame:

  • You cut the nail too short, or you cut the cuticle around the nail.
  • You have an ingrown toenail .
  • You’ve picked up a fungus, which you can get if you walk barefoot in common areas like a gym shower or locker room.
  • You have a — thickened skin caused by rubbing .
  • You put your feet in water a lot .

You’re more likely to get an infected toe if you have diabetes. Damage to your blood vessels from high blood sugar can make it harder for your body to fight off infections. And diabetic nerve damage can prevent you from feeling minor trauma that could lead to a toe infection.

If you have a weakened immune system, youâre also more likely to get toe infections. This includes people with HIV, or those who’ve had an organ transplant.

Staying One Step Ahead Of Toenail Fungus

An established fungal infection is hard to eradicate, but you can stop its spread and improve your toenail’s appearance.

Toenail fungus isn’t a pressing health problem. Yet a fungal infection can ruin the appearance of your nails and cause pain as it lifts the nail away from the nail bed. And fungal infections are notoriously difficult to get rid of. “You may want to consider fungal toenail a condition to be managed rather than cured,” says Dr. James P. Ioli, chief of the podiatry service at Harvard-affiliated Brigham and Women’s Hospital.

What Other Conditions Can Be Mistaken For Fungal Nails

Here are some other conditions you may have instead of fungal nails:

  • Lines and ridges: These are common and may be considered normal. They may worsen during pregnancy. A large groove down the center of the nail can be caused by nail biting. Some people may develop these changes following chemotherapy.
  • Senile nails: As you age, the nails become brittle and develop ridges and separation of the nail layers at the end of the nail. To avoid this, try to clean solutions and don’t soak the nails in water.
  • Whitish or yellowish nails can occur due to onycholysis. This means separation of the nail from the nail bed. The color you see is air beneath the nail. The treatment is to trim the nail short, don’t clean under it, polish if you want to hide the color, and wait two to three months. Persistent onycholysis can make the nails susceptible to fungal infection.
  • Red or black nails due to a hematoma, or blood under the nail, usually occur from trauma . The discolored area will grow out with the nail and be trimmed off as you trim your nails. If you have a black spot under your nail that was not caused by trauma, you may want to see a dermatologist or a podiatrist if it involves a toenail to make sure it is not melanoma . A simple biopsy can rule out malignancy .
  • Trichophyton

Toenail Fungus: Causes And Risk Factors

How to Get Rid of Toenail Fungus

Toenail fungus is a fungal infection in the toenail. It happens when a fungus anything from mold to yeast to other types of fungus gets in the nail bed from a cut or break in the nail or repetitive trauma to the nail, and penetrates the nail itself, says Dr. Sundling. The nail then continues to grow with the fungus. Once a nail plate is infected with fungus, it will never not be infected, and you must wait to see how it grows out and whether the new nail growing behind it is healthy. The new nail rarely grows in healthy without treatment, says Sundling.

Toenail fungus is very common 14 percent of people have it in North America, according to an article published in the journal PLoS Pathogens and its more common the older you get, adds Sundling. Wearing shoes that are too small can damage the nail and make it more vulnerable to fungus, as can having a fungal infection on the skin of the foot and not treating it, which could expose the nail to fungus. You may be more at risk to toenail fungus if you have diabetes, or a weaker immune system.

    Acrylic Nail Fungus Home Remedies

The first step after noticing an infection is to have the acrylic nail removed and to wash your fingernail with soap and water. Avoid putting on a new nail until the infection clears.

Anecdotally, some people claim the following home remedies have helped them clear their infection:

    • Vinegar. Vinegar contains acid that can inhibit the growth of fungi and bacteria. Try soaking your finger in a 2:1 ratio of warm water to vinegar.
    • Vicks VapoRub. An older 2011 study found Vicks VapoRub seemed to have a positive clinical effect on killing toenail fungi. You can try applying a small amount to your finger once a day.
    • Tea tree oil. According to the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health , one small study found evidence that tea tree oil may help treat nail fungus, but more research is needed. Try applying oil to your nail twice per day.
    • Oregano oil. The chemical thymol found in oregano oil may have antifungal properties. Try applying oregano oil to your nail twice per day with a cotton swab.
    • Listerine mouthwash. Listerine contains ingredients that have antifungal properties. Some people claim soaking your finger in original Listerine for 30 minutes a day may help clear the infection.

How To Treat Bacterial Infection With Tea Tree Oil

In 2006 Jan, a study published on the Clinical Microbiology Reviews released the evidence that tea tree oil had the antibacterial activity. In fact, there has been a lot of studies that proved the useful antibacterial property of this natural oil, despite the differences among their methods, the study results are still quite similar and consensus. Although this powerful essential oil is famous for its anti-viral than antibacterial functions, it is quite effective in fighting against a wide range of vaginal and skin infections triggered by bacteria. Tea tree oil, which could be applied onto our skin directly or be smeared inside your vaginal canal, helps destroy bacterial activities. It always needs to be adequately diluted to avoid the chances of skin burning. As this essential oil is very potent, it could be used for curing and controlling even a chronic infection but does not cause any harmful side effect at all.

Are You Confident Of The Diagnosis

What you should be alert for in the history

Green nail syndrome is caused by infection with Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Patients likely have a history of prolonged exposure to water or detergents , or an ungual trauma.

    Characteristic findings on physical examination

On physical examination, there is characteristic greenish or greenish-black discoloration of the nailfold with proximal chronic paronychia and distolateral onycholysis . A small portion of the nail may be involved or the entire nail itself. Most patients will only have involvement of one nail. On occasion, the nail adjacent to the primarily infected nail will have some secondary evidence of infection. Green striping of the nail has also been reported.

    Figure 1.

Coinfection with Trichophytan rubrum and Pseudomonas, a common occurrence.

    Expected results of diagnostic studies

Diagnostic studies are typically unnecessary. Gram stain and culture of any exudates and/or ungual fragments may confirm the diagnosis however, culture can be negative, as the green discoloration may be found a distance away from the infected site.

A pigment solubility test might also be performed, by submerging a sample of the affected nail in 1mL of distilled water. The liquid will turn a bluish-green color within 24 hours if there is a present infection with P. aeruginosa. Woods light examination will occasionally show a yellow-green fluorescence, which is characteristic of Pseudomonas.

What Are The Symptoms Of A Nail Infection

How to get rid of nail fungus fast and naturally

Symptoms of paronychia usually develop over several hours or days. Sometimes they take longer to develop. Symptoms appear where the nail meets the skin . The sides of the nail can also be affected.

    Paronychia symptoms include:

    • Pain, swelling and tenderness around the nail.
    • Skin that is red and warm to the touch.
    • Pus that builds up under the skin. A white to yellow, pus-filled abscess may form. If an abscess forms, it may require antibiotics and/or drainage.

Untreated, the nail can start to grow abnormally and may have ridges or waves. It may look yellow or green, and it can be dry and brittle. The nail can detach from the nail bed and fall off.

    Preventions To Avoid Finger Infection

Finger infections is mostly caused by bacteria build up, although some of them can be caused by herpes simplex virus, which commonly cause blisters on the genitals and mouth. To prevent your finger from getting infected, some common sense should be put into account, such as:

    • Avoid biting your fingernails. This does not only cause irritation to the nail beds, as you might cut it too short, causing the nail to stuck on the bed. This might cause severe pains and might lead into pus-filled infection. Biting your nails also transfer bacteria from the mouthwhich can also be the herpes simplex virus, to the finger.
    • Wear gloves every time you have contact with dirt, since the bacteria can be transferred into the nail bed without you noticing.
    • Keep the hands clean and wash them thoroughly after having contact with external things. This will kill potential germs.
    • Immediately treat any lacerations around the finger. Soak it in saline solution to kill harmful bacteria that might make the wound worse.
    • Avoid touching your genitals or mouth when you realize you have got herpes on those body parts.
