Mupirocin Ointment For Toenail Fungus

Etiology And Predisposing Factors

My Toenail Fungus Sucess Story

The most common cause of acute paronychia is direct or indirect trauma to the cuticle or nail fold. Such trauma may be relatively minor, resulting from ordinary events, such as dishwashing, an injury from a splinter or thorn, onychophagia , biting or picking at a hangnail, finger sucking, an ingrown nail, manicure procedures , artificial nail application, or other nail manipulation.35 Such trauma enables bacterial inoculation of the nail and subsequent infection. The most common causative pathogen is Staphylococcus aureus, although Streptococcus pyogenes, Pseudomonas pyocyanea, and Proteus vulgaris can also cause paronychia.3,6,7 In patients with exposure to oral flora, other anaerobic gram-negative bacteria may also be involved. Acute paronychia can also develop as a complication of chronic paronychia.8 Rarely, acute paronychia occurs as a manifestation of other disorders affecting the digits, such as pemphigus vulgaris.9

Toenail fungus is a common fungal condition that often starts after a rash on the foot spreads to the nails. When mild, it looks like white and yellow spots growing under the nail beds. If left untreated, the fungus can grow severely by hardening the nails and spreading to other toes.

There are multiple treatments for toenail fungus, though some are faster than others. The fastest way to eliminate the infection is through toenail laser treatment. Laser nail therapy specifically targets the microorganisms under your nail while leaving the keratin intact. In just a few treatments, the infection can be entirely eliminated. This allows your toenail to regrow healthy, clear keratin that then pushes out the old, discolored, damaged areas.

Traditional fungal nail treatments take a little longer to work. Topical medications have to be applied every day to the infected nails for as long as it takes to destroy the infectionwhich can be months. Oral medication is more efficient, since it travels through the blood stream to combat the fungus. Depending on your situation, you may have to take pills for a few weeks to a few months.

When Home Remedies Make Sense:

what is mupirocin for

For most people with mild to moderate nail fungus, home remedies are an option, especially when a trip to the doctor seems intimidating. Readers of our syndicated newspaper column have been sharing their success stories for over 40 years.

Lisa points out that patience is a critical component for overcoming nasty nail fungus:

I fought toenail fungus for several years. It seemed like I had two different kinds. One made the surface of the nail white and rough, and the other turned the nail yellow or orange. That one also caused the nail to crumble over time.

After reading about it on the Peoples Pharmacy, I tried tea tree oil first. It was very effective on the white toenail fungus. The nails grew out clear and stayed that way.

I tried Vicks next, and it worked on the yellow toenails. That was a slower process, as there was more damage. Several times when I was just getting one nail finished, the fungus would start on another one. It took about three years to get every nail clear, but I have had no new fungus for over a year now. The treatments were inexpensive and easy, but patience is required!

Lisa is absolutely on target. Even pricey prescription nail fungus treatments are tested for about a year. You can read about a pricey prescription anti-fungal liquid at this link:

Preventing A Recurring Ingrown Toenail

Avoid shoes that put too much pressure on the ingrown toenail. This includes shoes that are too tight, shoes with a small toe box and high heels. Shoes which are too large can cause irritation when the foot slides back-and-forth inside the shoe. Poorly fitting shoes can too often cause damage to the toenail. Many healthcare professionals will recommend that those with symptomatic nails wear open-toed shoes such as sandals. If you are unsure how to properly trim your deformed toenail, ask your healthcare provider. Insure that you use clean instruments to cut straight across the top of the toenails. Do not trim the nails too short or curve the edges. If you have faulty foot mechanics that place an excess of pressure on the nail fold, you might consider wearing corrective orthotic devices.

Can mupirocin be used for toenail fungus?

    +0

Mupirocin is an antibiotic and it is NOT going to help the skin fungus. Try an antifungal cream like Monistat, or tinactin, they will treat fungal infections. It it gets worse with an antifungal, then it is not a fungal infection or you may have to use a steroid cream or tablets, you didn’t mention if it was diagnosed as fungal for sure. Best of Luck, Patti

    This is incorrect.

JMG uses the foot soaks to relax:

Ive had 2-3 fingernail fungus attacks I used the half-water half vinegar solution to soak the nail for 20-30 minutes twice a day and it worked! It is not speedy, taking about a month or so to kill the fungus. It takes discipline, but it gives me an excuse to sit down, read, and relax while Im undergoing my treatment!

    Serena adds:

Ive been using the vinegar/Listerine mixture on my feet now for a month. It is working beautifully.

I got toenail fungus from a nail salon, and have had it for over 3 years. This is the only thing that has even touched the fungus .

My nail is now finally growing back normally and the fungus has turned white and the toenail is no longer spongy. Ill be able to wear sandals without bandaids very soon! Not only is Listerine/vinegar good for the toenails, but my feet have never looked better the cracks and redness have disappeared.

I soak my feet every night for 15-30 minutes. And Im going to continue doing this until my toenails have completely grown out, at least 3 times per week.
