What Do You Need To Do Dip Nails At Home

If youre tired of spending money at the salon, then youre probably ready to start experimenting with different types of at-home manicures.

One of our favorite DIY manicures has to be dip powder. The process is pretty easy and the manicure lasts a few weeks. Plus, with an at-home nail dip kit, youll get everything you need to complete a perfect set with little to no experience needed.

Lets take a look at some popular dip powder FAQs and then cover our step-by-step process on how to apply dip powder at home.

How To Remove Dip Powder Nail Colour At Home

  • File surface of each nail with a nail file to break the sealing layer.
  • Apply cuticle oil at the base of each nail, to prevent the area from drying out during the soaking process .
  • Soak a cotton ball generously with acetone, place the wet cotton on top of one of your nails, then wrap your finger in aluminium to hold the cotton ball in place. Repeat on all 10 nails. Its helpful to gently squeeze the foil after initally wrapping the nail to help securely lock it into place.
  • Allow to soak for about 25 to 30 minutes. Resist the urge to remove the foil sooner, as that can end up prolonging the process. If you remove the foil before the powder has adequately softened up, scraping off the remaining residue will take longer and possibly damage your nails.
  • Remove the foil. At this point, the colour should look cracked or wrinkly. If not, re-wrap and soak for five more minutes, then check again. Use your cuticle pusher to gently remove anything left on your nails. You should always scrape the cuticle pusher in the same direction that you would apply polish to avoid damaging your nail plate.
  • Lightly buff the surface of your nails with the nail buffer to create a smooth surface, as some product might be left behind, even after using a cuticle pusher.
  • Brush away any debris with a fluffy brush.
  • Spray rubbing alcohol onto nails and swipe with a cotton ball or round to remove any leftover residue. Prep your nails for another manicure, if desired.

They say you can tell everything about a girl just from the look of her nails. If you think about it, its usually true.

However, as much as I love the look of nails done by a nail salon, they can be extremely pricey over time. I found I was spending $1,126 a year on my dip fingernails and $953 a year on my gel toes! Thats over $2,000 a year! Over 10 years, thats $20,000! However, if I invested the nail money I was spending every 3 weeks and put it into the stock market, after 20 years, Id have $102,491! After 30 years, Id have $259,144! Thats the power of compound interest!

Check it out for yourself in a compound interest calculator, linked here for you. The stock market makes 8% per year on average. Its actually sickening when you realize how much we pay for all the maintenance we require.

Okay, sorry to get all nerdy, but its changes like this in life that do change your life.

Remove The Dip Powder Very Carefully

Avoid aggressively buffing your nails or attempting to peel off dip powder with a sharp nail file, lest you want to suffer severe nail damage or âgreeniesâ , warns Sritapan. âThere is no cure for greenies or nail damage except for waiting three-plus months for the nail to grow out.â Instead, start by shortening your nails as preferred, and then filing the nail surface with as thin a file as possible, says Ogawa. âThis process makes it easier to soak off.â Next, soak a cotton pad in pure acetone, gently wrap it around the nail, and then cover it in foil or the plastic removal clips that may come with your kit. Consider placing nails under a mini steamer while theyâre soaking, suggests Honey, as pure acetone can feel uncomfortable. From there, wait 15 to 20 minutes before removing everything. Any remaining residue can be removed with a cuticle pusher or nail file.

  • If you apply colored polish on top of your manicure, dont get it on your cuticles. This can cause chipping and lifting of the polish. Also, mix the polish by rolling it between your hands instead of shaking it, so that air bubbles dont promote chipping.
  • If you use a fan to dry your nails, opt for cool air instead of warm air. Use a blow dryer on the cool setting.

How To Choose Between Dip Powder And Acrylic Nails

Before using the dip system, Aaron always likes to know what her clients long-term care wishes are for their nails. Does the client wish to be as natural as possible or would they care to extend the nails with tips? she muses. Are they okay soaking off with every visit? Do they want natural colored nails or a color polished look? These questions determine whether dip or acrylic is best. For clients that are accustomed to gel polish on their natural nails, Aaron says that an upgrade to the dip system is perfect. These clients are already used to soaking off every two to three weeks and with dip powder, it would be no different, she explains. For clients that are used to acrylic nails, I only suggest dip powder to them when its time for a new set. So when soaking off for a new set I begin the consultation by first looking at the condition of the clients nails and asking: Do you want to keep your natural nails and if so at what length? Depending on their answer, Aaron will recommend dip powder, as its typically gentler than classic acrylic.

How To Use A Dip Powder Nail Kit

Generally speaking, the process for doing dip powder nails is pretty simple. My go-to dip powder nail kit is from NailBoo, however the process is pretty much the same no matter which dip powder kit you choose. Here are the steps I’ve found work best, adapted from instructions that came with the dip powder kit and NailBoo’s video tutorial.

  • Start by thoroughly washing your hands with soap and water. Wipe your nails with alcohol or acetone , clean under the nails, and push back cuticles with a wooden stick or steel cuticle pusher.
  • Apply a thin layer of the base to one of your nails. Immediately dip your nail into the builder powder at a 45-degree angle. Repeat on all 10 nails. Brush off any excess powder with a fluffy nail brush.
  • Apply another layer of the base and then immediately into a color dip powder of your choice. Repeat on all 10 nails. You can repeat this step multiple times to create a richer color. I’ve found that dipping once in the builder/foundation and twice in the color dip powder creates enough color payoff. Pro Tip: When dipping into the powder, your nail should appear fully covered and shine-free. If your nail still looks wet, dip back into the powder without applying any additional base.
  • Apply the activator to each nail.
  • After allowing the activator to dry for two to five minutes, buff the top layer of the nail to create a smooth, even surface.
  • Apply another coat of the activator and let nails dry for an additional two to five minutes.

    How To Apply Activator

Activator is as simple as brushing it over your nails. You dont need a lot of it, and you dont really have to worry about missing your nail, because it wont leave any residue behind like gel or matte top coats would.

After applying, wait around 5 seconds for it to dry . You can wave your hands around like a crazy person to speed up the process.

Follow step 2 and 3 all over again to create more vibrant color and longer lasting nails. Sometimes one dip coat is enough, but usually youll need two full dips.

How Does Nail Polish Change Color

At Home Dip Powder Nails Tutorial

In the Mood, nail polish changes color when heated to 91 degrees Fahrenheit. His normal body temperature is degrees, but his fingers are slightly colder. An increase in body temperature, such as running your hands under warm/hot water, going outside in hot weather, or even mood swings can cause nail polish to discolor.

Paint A Base Coat And Dip Nails Into The Dip Powder

Paint one nail with a thin, even base coat. Make sure not to get any on your cuticles or your skin because the powder will stick to that too.

You want to do this fairly fast, then as soon as youre done, dip your nail into the dip powder.

After dipping, tap your finger to remove any excess. Then, paint the next nail and begin the process again.

Its best to paint one by one because you dont want the base coat to dry, as the powder wont stick properly.

While these nails could be done with acrylic nails, I feel that with dip nails vs acrylic nails, dip always wins, and these nails are just as beautiful!

If youre wondering how to do dip nails at home, look at the sides of these nails. They are clearly filed so that the nails blend naturally into the cuticle but are thick in the middle.
