Making The Vinegar Foot Soak
Vinegar will not hurt your feet, but you should still dilute it for a foot soak. Generally, using 1-part vinegar to 2-parts water is a good ratio. If youre tolerating the diluted vinegar soaks, and not noticing any difference, you can use a stronger soak.
While the soak will smell strong, the odor will dissipate after the vinegar dries from your feet. You can also use essential oils to change the scent slightly.
How The Problem Originates
Nothing life threatening herejust an annoying, unsightly toenail problem that may have you hiding your feet and not wanting to participate in certain activities. Why go on suffering the embarrassment of thick, yellow, brittle nails, when there is help close by?
Toenail fungus is caused by a class of microorganisms called dermatophytes that burrow under your nail. The fungus is found all over the place, but certain risk factors increase you chance of falling prey to it. Being male, older, or diabetic increases your chances, as well as footwear that keeps your feet damp and frequenting public areas where people walk barefoot .
The fungus slips into any tiny opening in your skincut, blister, rashor any separation between your nail and nail bed. It feeds on the hard tissue, causing those unsightly changes in your nails as they degrade. Because they dont stay on the surface, the fungi can be hard to eradicate, but laser therapy offers new hope.
How To Spot The Signs Of Fungal Nail Infections In Toddlers
Fungal nail infections also known as onychomycosis can happen to anyone, even children. Theyre not usually serious, but they can be unpleasant, especially for a little one who just wants to run and play freely.
So how do you know whether your little one is suffering from a fungus infection in their toenail? Keep a lookout for these signs and symptoms:
- Discoloration of their toenails. Instead of a natural pale pink color, they may begin to turn black, yellow or green.
- Thickening or the nail. When trimming your little ones toenails, pay attention to the nails that seem to have an unusual texture. Here are some of the reasons why people get thicker toenails.
- Brittle or crumbly nails. Toenails are supposed to be strong. If your toddlers toenails are crumbling and easily broken, there could be fungus involved.
- Pain or discomfort. Early toenail fungus isnt usually painful, but if the condition is left untreated, it can start to hurt. The pain is particularly noticeable when putting pressure on the affected toe.
If you see any of these symptoms in your toddler, its safe to assume that they might have a fungal nail infection. The faster you start treatment, the faster you will help your toddlers toenails to heal.

These toenail fungus treatments will prevent or get rid of the problem.
How Laser Therapy Works
Laser treatment for fungal nails has been around for a while now, and there is evidence that it effectively destroys nail funguscalled onychomycosis. The method uses concentrated light beams of different wavelengths and focuses them on the site where the fungus thrives under the nail. Because it pinpoints the location so precisely, the fungus itself is vaporized, but the surrounding tissue is not harmed. Two separate wavelengths of light are used for the most effective treatment.

Doctor Prescribed Ways To Treat Nail Fungus
Fortunately, there several ways to get rid of nail fungus. Most treatments aim to eradicate the causative organism and restore the normal appearance of healthy nails. Treatment options range from self-care remedies, to medications recommended by a general practitioner, to ointments bought over-the-counter without a prescription.
Its important to note that repeat infections are common even with treatment. Whats more, remedies are not all equally effective with some even causing possible side effects.
With that in mind, here are some of the top ways to treat and get rid of nail fungus at home.
When To Refer To Podiatry
Before initiating topical or oral therapy, patients should ideally be referred to a podiatrist for nail trimming and debridement. This assists with removing as much fungus as possible and improves topical drug penetration. Debridement alone cannot be recommended for the treatment of OM patients using a combination of debridement and topical nail lacquer have shown a significant improvement in mycological cure compared with debridement only. Patients with nail trauma owing to footwear, dystrophic toenails affecting other toes or who describe discomfort when walking owing to thickened toenails should also be referred.
When there is treatment failure with topical, oral and combination therapies, a podiatrist may be able to carry out a chemical or surgical nail avulsion .
If there is doubt over the original diagnosis, or where no improvement has been seen with treatment, pharmacists should refer patients to a podiatrist or their GP.

Whos At Risk For Fungal Infections
There are many different causes of fungal nail infections. Each cause has a treatment of its own. Although many of the causes of a fungal nail infection are preventable, some risk factors increase the likelihood of developing one. Youre more likely to develop a fungal nail infection if you:
- wear closed-toe shoes, such as tennis shoes or boots
Nail infections occur more often in men than in women, and the infections are found in adults more often than in children. If you have family members who often get these types of fungal infections, youre more likely to get them as well.
Older adults have a high risk for getting fungal nail infections because they have poorer circulation. The nails also grow more slowly and thicken as we age.
A fungal infection of the nail may affect part of the nail, the entire nail, or several nails.
Common signs of a fungal nail infection include:
- a distorted nail that may lift off from the nail bed
- an odor coming from the infected nail
- a brittle or thickened nail
What Is The Prognosis Of Fungal Nails
Curing fungal nails can be difficult and treatment can take up to 18 months. Relapse and reinfection are common. Trying to remove or modify your risk factors, if possible, is essential to preventing reinfection. People who have medical illnesses that predispose them to fungal nails can have an even more difficult time eradicating the fungus.

The nail plate and nail bed are joined by layers of hard, translucent, keratinised cells. The nail bed and nail matrix are vascular components of the nail, with nail cells located within the nail matrix where the nail plate is formed. The thickness of the nail plate determines the length of the matrix
- Apply cosmetic nail varnishes or artificial nails
- Walk without footwear in public areas
- Cut nails too short.
How Can It Be Treated
Treating a fungal nail can be a lengthy process it can take several months to clear. This is largely due to the time it takes for your toenail to grow.
You’ll only see a clear improvement when the damaged nail has grown out. It can take six months to a year after the treatment has finished before the nail looks normal again.
Speak to your pharmacist for advice on treating fungal nail infections. See your GP if over the counter treatment hasnt worked or if the infection is severe or has spread to other nails. Make sure you see your GP or a foot specialist if you have diabetes and develop a fungal nail infection, as people with diabetes are at an increased risk of foot problems.
How Do Dermatologists Diagnose Nail Fungus
To find out if a patient has nail fungus, a dermatologist examines your nails and nearby skin. Its important to check the skin because the fungus can spread. You may already have a skin infection caused by fungus like athletes foot.
To get rid of the infection, you will need to treat all infected areas.
Before giving you the diagnosis, your dermatologist may also take some samples. Collecting a bit of debris from beneath a nail, trimming off part your nail, or scraping off a bit of skin can be very helpful. In a lab, these samples can be examined under a microscope to find out whats causing the problem.

Regularly changing your socks and shoes can also cut down on the growth of unwanted foot fungus. Both socks and athletic shoes can also be washed in hot water to rid the growth of yeasts and fungi that may be growing on the fabric. Some shoes can be machine dried. Drying shoes in the sun is another option when cleaning footwear.
Adding a half-cup of baking soda or one cup of vinegar to the washing machine can help eliminate bacteria or fungus on socks or shoes.
Boots and other footwear that are not machine washable could be wiped out with a vinegar and water solution or sprayed with an over-the-counter antifungal spray. Medicated powders are also helpful in treating shoes for foot fungus.

What The Experts Say
The most common presentation of toenail fungus is a white/yellow discoloration of the nail that is thick and filled with yellow/white keratin debris. The more severe the toenail fungus, the thicker the nail, and the more nails involved makes it that much harder to treat the nails even with effective therapies.” Orit Markowitz, MD, founder and CEO of OptiSkin treatment center in New York City.
